Most likely, this was my last strobbed game of the year. There are some play-offs coming up, but will most likely be able to shoot ambient. For this game, a bit more experimentation and bounced both ab800s off the ceiling. They did not quite have enough power to overcome all of the ambient, so had some minor motion blur. Your comments are always welcome.
Tim, these are great shots. I didn't use to be a fan of the bounced look but I've grown to love it especially in one my gyms where i'm able to bounce using a B400 and a B1600.
Tim....these look real nice. They have a nice even balance and you managed the shadows real good. Looks like the fans play it up real good which helps add to the game atmosphere. There's a few gyms I shoot in where space is limited in the "end zone" like you have here and sometimes I get the proverbial pom pom in the face.
Tim,
Thanks for sharing your setup and photos. Like Tom said earlier, I have not seen anyone nail the WB like you do with your strobes. Every set you've posted this season has been stellar.
Thanks for sharing your setup, Tim- sure looks like you've got it pretty well nailed down. Are you seeing a big improvement adding the 580, or is it pretty subtle?
You are welcome Tom. I'd say the addition of the 580 is a bit more than subtle but less than huge. Two things help. 1. added light and 2. shutter speed at 1/300. Without the 580, I can get 1/250 or 1/320 (slight banding) but I prefer to get as fast of a sync speed as possible. As far as I know, you can't dial in 1/300 on the 1d4 w/o a flash being attached and on.
Also, thanks Billy and Frank.
Frank, I could shoot some from the baseline near the lane, but you are right, the cheerleaders do block my view some as they move around and it also seems the ref is almost always parked in my way. And if it isn't the ref or the cheerleaders, it's the fans constant movement through that area. When I sit in the corner, most of the kids are kind enough to walk behind me and not in front of me and I'm also sitting slightly forward of where the refs walk the baseline. They only block my view temporarily as they move into position as they transition from one end to the other. And finally, yeah, or student section has really rocked this year and have made the games more enjoyable to shoot and provided great backdrops for the photography.
