I currently have a D7000 and need to purchase a second body. Should I assume a D400 is on its way to fill the gap between the 7000 and the 800? Pricepoint is obviously important to me but I also want a camera that improves on the D7000 iq. What would you guys do, wait for a d400, buy a second D7000 or buy a used D700? thanks, Mike
I'm thinking Nikon has stopped making D7000's due to factory flood. They probably decided to retool with the new D400 or D8000 and have been in production already on those so when announced they'll have plenty of inventory... my hopes.
Look at sony, they're already up and running on Nex 7 and A77 production after flood.
what void? with the D800 you get both worlds. FF 36MP @4fps and DX (crop)15+ @5fps it covers the bases pretty good
it has both UDMA CF and SD and its variants
I would assume that the D400 is on its way - but the real question is are you going to need that second body before it becomes available? I'd hold out on the second body as long as I could and if push comes to shove, buy a used D7000 as your backup. A D700 doesn't make much sense unless you're using all FX glass.

The D400 will likely have 24MP in the DX format, a better AF system than the D7000, probably different memory cards, etc. It should also be fast at 8FPS like the D300 series. I don't think the D7000 will go away, unless there is a D7100 or something. The $1100-1200 price point is a popular one for the features.
I really hope that Nikon sets up the D400 to compliment the D800 as they did with the D300 and D700 series cameras. Same batteries, same card slots, menus, body button positions, etc...
the changeover in batteries was required by newer more stringent japanese safety standards (new protected connectors) with a little push from the US to help prevent easy shorting out and fire. the EN-EL15 currently resides in the D800, D7000, V1 and has excellent power density.

I'm waiting until a early summer for a D300 replacement. If it doesn't come I'll decide what I want at that time. Personally I don't want FX and Nikon would be stupid to out out the high end consumer and Pro DX market. There is way to big a gap in price point between the D7000 and the D800. I'd expect the D400 to come in at just under $2000, same as the D300 starting price.
In my own mind, there is no doubt Nikon will have a D400-type camera. They have had a long series of them now starting with the D100. They must win that price point against Canon. There is a market for a camera that has faster AF etc. than the D7000 with wildlife & sports photographers. I'm waiting myself to see what Nikon comes up with. If it matches or beats the D800 at ISO 3200 (and I think that's certainly possible,) that's probably the camera I'll end up with.
I need something by May.........I guess I can wait and see until May and then decide. I need a good hi iso camera. I have a 17-55 and a 70-200 so I can go FX or DX.

I would like to see the D400 be the affordable full frame camera that everyone has been wanting. Yes, the D700 was affordable, and still is, but with the D800 coming in at $3K, a 16mp FF D400 could presumably come in at $1800-2000. It doesn't make much sense for Nikon to not only have such a pricing gap between the D7000 and D800, but to have such a performance gap between the D7000 and D800. Even from the D4, there is a huge performance gap between it and the D800. The D800 really is such a strange camera to introduce. Where is the upgrade path? You move from a D80/90/300/7000 to what? A D800? You are kidding, right? Sure, you can go to the D700, but how does that help sell new products? It doesn't. And that is a bad financial move for Nikon.
A D400, or some variant of that will come soon. It may be Q4 of this year, or even 2013, but having such a gap in their line up is not a wise idea for Nikon.
I currently have 3 D7k's and had 4 (my second shooter just liked the D700 more). I love these little buggers more than the D300s', so no contest there for IQ, IMO.
However, if you CAN wait for a D400, it will likely be a better camera than the D7k and I would be happy swapping my 7k's for it.
I'd go with a D300s. Cheaper, but still around the D7000. D800 is just too pricey in my opinion. D400, I'd rather not wait and have the camera to use, plus, you'd experience more with it. On top of that, I'd stay with both having the same sensors, in this case, DX. Get a used d300s here on FM is what I'm saying C:
We can be sure there will be a D400 very soon. Nikon won't leave the big market segment between $1200 and $3000 to the competition. The D400 will likely have all the D800 features but a much smaller price tag and a DX sensor that's even better than the D7000. If recent Nikon camera releases are any guide, people will fall over themselves to place preorders.
