So 8fps is also possible using rechargeable AA batteries? and not just the EN-EL4 and EN-EL4a?

Correct. You can also put the regular D700 battery in the grip, or alkaline batteries, but those will not increase the frame rate.

You need to use rechargeable batteries, not Duracell or other alkaline batteries. I use Eneloops personally and it works beautifully at 8fps.

+1. I only tried it to see it work, but have personally not needed 8fps in my shooting.

i used 8 rechargeable batteries (2500 mhs) and it worked. but. . . for some reason the battery pack didn't stay connected in camera and it would go back to 5 fps. frustrating.

Easy fix! Make sure you take the en-el3e battery out of the body. Load the AAs(rechargable OR alkaline will work), set to cH shutter mode, and fire away.

The issue you're having is that the AA's don't give detailed charge info. The body either knows (a)the AA's are fully charged, or (b) they are NOT fully charged.

So with the standard battery in the body, and AA's in the grip(set to grip battery 1st), you get a little time with 8fps. Then when the AA's are LESS THAN fully charged, the body automatically reverts to the en-el3e in the body. If you take away that backup energy source, it use the AA's al the way down to zero charge, 8fps all the way.
