Thanks for the interpretation but the color black as you have defined it in your histogram did not exist in the scene I was viewing when I took the was shooting this scene. The lighting effects were extremely bland other than the sky and most of the photographers who were nearby as I was shooting were complaining about the lack of the lighting dynamics that morning.
Very nice Alan, you really put this place in perspective, is this a single shot?
Since the sky is the larger portion here, boosting the contrast/saturation in the sky, might spice this up...
This is great. There is no need to increase the satration. The soft light is exactly what makes this image special. It has a radiance about it that is magical. Keep it as it is!!! Love it.

Soft and subtle Alan. You took the soft essence of the morning. I still can't remember where those skies were when I looked west....possibly a few minutes late. Very nice.
Alan, are you already back? How's the trip?
I love the colors and the texture. The geometry feels a bit odd, it's like it it is tipped to the right, although it may be just an illusion.
Alan, I can see why you shot that sky in the morning. Very nice take away, you shot it much wider than I did ( surprise since my 100 - 400 was welded on to my tripod that day ). I enjoyed the trip and hopefully will have something to post this weekend. Rick
Thanks for the feedback This was surprisingly complex to prices and keep the mood of the scene intact. It was hard to keep from goosing up the colors instead of presenting it more au natural.

This is a single shot without blending. I did use a hand held 2 stop ND Grad for the sky.

NIce work Alan. hope you guys had a great trip. did you get anything from earlier this morning? sure are some beautiful cloud shapes.
I did get more earlier that morning - I am working up a 3 shot panorama looking towards the south with far less subtle skies than this one.

This is why I carry a wide array of lenses and change them often. I am still amazed that almost every camera out on that ridge was pointed down instead of shooting the clouds.

Sweet takeaway great pov and the nice soft delicate light and colors work wonderfully here, Tim was telling me you sucked up all the good light that morning
I like both versions. They are different interpretations of the same scene. The original is very soft and therefore conveys a corresponding mood (tranquility, serenity). The second gives a harsher impression which goes also well with the desert landscape.

Alan- On the one hand, doing your best with the light at the time.
On the other hand, the pastel-like effect is scrumptious!
I love the first image.
