p.10 #1 · p.10 #1 · What is your NEX lens lineup?

Update:
Sold my 5DM2 and lenses and now completely Nex-7 with Yongnuo triggers and 3xflash.

Sony E 10-18mm f/4 OSS (really good IQ and range, great coverage from 15mm - 21mm - 28mm)
OM Zuiko 24 f/2.8 (fantastic)
Leica 28mm Elmarit-M f/2.8 (love the look and IQ but purple corners is a bummer)
VM 35mm f/1.2 II (bit on the heavy side)
G 45mm f/2
Leica 50mm Summilux-M f/1.4 (delicious)
OM Zuiko 135 f/2.8
OM Zuiko 300mm f/4.5 (so cheap but focus is a bit iffy)

Really? Mine(vII) barely shows anything, which version is yours?
Leica 50mm Summilux-M f/1.4 (delicious)
I'd love one, but hard to swallow the price.

Nex 7
Sony 10-18/4
Olympus 21/3,5
Sigma 30/2.8 (replacing Olympus 28/2). Haptics aren't as good, but I like the flexibility of autofocus.
CV 35/1,2 (favorite)
CV 50/1.1
Olympus 50/2 Macro
ZM 50/2
Leica 90/2.5 Elmarit
Canon 135/3.5 LTM

Considering CV 21/1.8....

intriguing, i've always avoided the 28 because of the white spot issue, but my 40 cron which is the same design as the rokkor 40mm appears to be sharper than even my g45 in the central portion. flatness of field isn't it's strong point, but it's one of my favorites in the f/2.8 to f/11 range.

are you looking for sharpness to match the topcor wide open or stopped down and in the corners or in the center?

Never owned the 28. But, for what its worth, I found the 40 and 90 sharp and I liked there rendering very much. The 40 did flare pretty bad though and i had the supposedly better CLE version. The 90f4 was beautiful rendering and sharp I just didnt get to use it much.

I definitely want to try that one day. The f/2 was quite good!

I'm looking for WO sharpness, stopped down the Rokkor was bested by the Topcor WO and you say the 40 Cron is sharper than the G45 which reinforces my thinking that my sample was bad.

ah, f/2 is the only aperture where i think the g45 is sharper in the center. the 40 cron has a lot of "leica glow" wide open that makes it look less sharp.

It's the Asph version, 11 606. I like to push the files in post and it becomes quite apparent. Still a fantastic lens, just the feel of it is amazing

I have the same, and I agree. It's wonderful, but has color issues on the 7. I've not seen any color issues yet with it on the Nex-6, however. They make a great combination. It's a keeper either way.

CV 40mm f/1.4

Love them all nearly equally for each of their unique qualities.
If I had to let any go, it would only be the CV 40mm…

Examples from the different lenses here.

Now that I've listed - Let me go on to describe my experience/opinion with each of those:

Hex - "wide-ish" story teller, clinical, reportage, sharp and soft at the same time. The sharpest of the lenses without looking overtly modern. Excellent color. Lovely at f4 & 5 for street. Shallow DOF is limited even f2.8-3, but calm and beautiful in it's subtlety. Ultra precise focusing and zone metering is the clearest marked and accurate. Bottom Line - the best built of all the lenses. This is a 'Japanese Leica' and my most favorite to handle and use when in fast situations.

Skopar - 3D pop, modern, sharp, great focal length, vibrant color, moody if you want it to be. Nearly perfect overall. Focusing is fine. -A gem - if it went to f2.0 or lower this would be a perfect anytime lens - it's a great day performer. Bottom line - my best day lens.

Pen - Classic in its rendering, but sharp and good color that it's hard to believe for it's age. Good for macro. Can be used for just about anything - day or night. Super sharp beginning at 2.8, - slightly odd to focus, feels old /is old. - Bottom line - My best general purpose lens.

Cron - has magic unlike any others and earns it's Leica legacy, right now - with the crop - is a terrific portrait lens, sharp, good color. Neither modern or classic in it's rendering. - Fast focusing feels like 'power steering'. Bottom line - It's a Leica - has F2.0 so can be used at any time - once I go FF this most likely will be my exclusive shooter.

Nokton - moody, classic, sepia'ish colors, contrasty B/W, great at night portraits, people pop out of the slightly nervous backgrounds, soft on landscapes. Beautifully designed and lots of glass for the size. Focusing is fine. Bottom line - This is the one for night shots of people.

Looks a bit like a waste to me if he's not getting the M (or M9). The tri elmar really is great on a FF sensor, as is the 50 lux.

I had no idea where that Nex 7 would lead me..

Sold the tri-elmar, the voigtlander, the zeiss 21 and 35, a couple of Nikon lenses and got a 28 cron, 35 and 75 lux, a M9P

John,

Could you share your experience with the Canon 70-300L? Which Metabones adapter and how does it function? I was lucky to pick up the 70-300L on sale and intended it as part of my Canon 5d MkII travel kit. I also have a NEX 5-N and would love to know if I can use the 70-300L on my NEX 5N.

Thank you all.

Dave

I have been shooting Canon for a long time. Once you commit to a lens mount it is too expensive to change. That is until the interchangeable lens mirror-less cameras like the Sony arrived. Currently I have a 5N with a simple Kipon EOS-NEX adapter. What I have used so far on the 5N:

Kit 18-55
Samyang 8mm
Samyang 14mm
Samyang 35mm
Samyang 85mm

I would like to get a smart adapter like the Matabones so that I can make use of my Canon Auto focus and IS Lenses.

There's no reason to not use them on your NEX, just don't expect similar AF speeds with the smart adapters, just check the compatibility list on their website.

IMO, there is no reason to jump to the other side, all the new gear is amazing, if you like the lenses you have why change? Canon's EOS-m could in a generation or two be an excellent digital back for EF glass.
Remember, lenses are the investment, the bodies are the relatively disposable part.

I really hated using that lens. I was never unhappy with the results, but it sucked all of the fun out of getting there. I didn't include that in the "For Sale" post because, A, Funsucker is not good advertising and, B, some things you just have to learn for yourself. The good news is I think you'll get out of it unscathed if you decide to sell. Someday it might even find someone who can appreciate it more for what it does than how it feels doing it.

I just saw this.

Hahaha... NOW you tell me It's alright man, I knew what I was getting into going in, I just needed to experience it first hand. After spending a weekend with the lens I'm starting to feel a little more comfortable with it, but it's still a hard transition to make. That CV 24/1.4 sure is tempting...

Wow my list is pretty small

Kit 18-55
Sony E 50mm/1.8
Sony 10-18 (purchasing in coming few weeks)

All I am looking for is native portrait lens 85-100mm f1.8-2 or better and my kit will be complete for foreseeable future

First tier: Great lenses on a Nex 5n.

CV 15
g28, g45, g90

Second tier used much less:I often rotate one of these along with the first tier lenses.

OM Zuiko 28mm 3.5
Rolleinar-MC 28mm 2.8
Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.8
Pentacon 50mm 1.8
Pentax Super Takumar 50mm 1.4
Pentax Super Takumar 55mm 1.8
Minolta MC Rokkor 58mm 1.2
Leica Elmar 9cm f4

I just got a very clean Topcon 135mm 3.5 for $25. Waiting for the adapter to try it.

My third tier lenses would all be automatics for use on my SLT A77 which I sometimes use on the Nex with an adapter. I hate to put all that bulk on a Nex 5n (the only reason of course is to post on the Nex images forum)

Since I've started shooting frequently again, I've realized I've got too much in the lower focal lengths.

I've been thinking of trading my MD 50 1.4 out for a 55/58 of some kind. I've shot with loads of them, but they all kind of run together. My MD is a bit soft and 'glowy' wide open. I've shot with Biotars and the MC, MD, Nikkors, Hexanon, Olys.

I'm also open to suggestions on small telephotos to compete with the MD 100/2.5 I've got currently.

Yeah, if CV is doing a 24/1.4, I can't find anything on it. But that would be a CV lens that would interest me, so if you've got the insider track, Jacob, please do tell.
