p.1 #1 · canon 24mm 1.4 - worth the extra $$$ for newer version?

I am in the process of upgrading to a few more fast primes. The 24 1.4 (version 1) is about $350 cheaper than the 24 1.4 (version 2).

Is the newer 24mm lens significantly better? I would think the original 24 would have to be mighty, mighty good....

Or, my thought is that I could buy the 24 version 1 and have $350 towards the 50/1.2 or the 35/1.4....

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

And jolson, where are you finding a v2 for $350 more than a v1? I would imagine the b&s board has these prices:
-v1 = $950-1000
-v2 = $1600-1700

as an owner of both, i think the MK2 is remarkably sharper and more accurate when focusing at distance at 1.4-2.2.

Question for you guys!
I have the 16-35ii and I love it for wide, but always wish I had f/1.4; would you say that the 24L v1 is a sharper lens?
I would love to hear your opinions!! If I sold that lens, I would be an all prime shooter

I've owned the original 24 and recently upgraded to the ii version. I have to say, both are great. I don't think people put a lot of value into the newest version for some reason, but it is sharper and faster than the old version. I like both, kinda wish I would have kept the old version too.

I would say it depends on how much you see yourself using it. If you plan to have it as an occasional use lens, then the original will suit you fine. But if you seeing it being an important staple in your bag, then springing for the VII is probably worth it.

I have the VII and generally really like it, though I do find it VERY picky with focusing. It also has more CA than I'm used to with L primes.

I run with the 24L v2 as my primary lens. for me, the 16-35L is the extra wide when needed.
also run with 50 and 135. some times changing the 135 to 85 f1.8 depending on the size/area of wedding or situation.

The 16-35L II is a pretty darn sharp lens, but it's totally different than what the 24L does IMO. I'd much rather have the faster prime than the ultra wide angle.

I hated the 24L mki. I have the mkII now and love it.

Bought a nice Version 1 used for about $950 in 2010.

Used it on vacation at either f1.6 or f1.8.

You can view the photos HERE.

If you can find used Version 2 for about $1300 then that might be good deal.
