Thanks Dave. They are bamboo sections held together and on one side each section has a tightly fitting piece of glass (if I remember correctly), and dust and drops of condensed water show.
The sculpture was shown in a huge bamboo forest and the streaks you noticed are in fact the out of focus living bamboos in the background.

I'd be tempted to make some severe crop (say right, mid height) and play with some strong contrasts. lots to select from . . .

Tom, thanks, and some of my feelings can be found in your thoughts. This is already a crop of the original frame (about 2/3). Just imagine the artist's thoughts about how many, and which, and how, elements have to be included in his sculpture.
