There is a precedent. Think Sigma SD1: $6900 at introduction. Now renamed and reduced to $2300 Can the $6800 1DX be far behind? The fight over this is probably what was behind the recent Canon CEO resignation.
OK, now we know for certain:
1. a 5DIII (or X) will be announced Feb. 28
2. The 1DX will sell for $2200
Therefore:
3. The new 5D (III or X) will sell for less than $2000, even if it has a 40 MP sensor
And you can rate that CR3, even though that sounds like a raw file from the new bodies.

Hey...You know what I was just thinking of and is really effin' sad...
When Fred said Feb 30th...I actually thought he was serious... I was tlling my wife and she was like...there's no 30th...
Fred, good one. It only took me a week.
I understand the part where it took you a week to figure out that Feb 2012 had 29 days only.....that indeed may be considered sad, but it doesn't somehow surprise me.
The part I do not understand is.....what was your wife like ? What were you trying to say there ?

Jess......it is probably the texting phenomenon which is damaging our young uns.

I thought in one of the threads (that I apparently cannot find anymore) it was said that feb 7th were the body and lens announcements from canon?
Well it's the 9th and the only things i am seeing is people bitching about the 24-70, the 5d2, and getting a chubby on the d800.
So, where are the body announcements? I thought eosfun said to prepare to be let down by the announcement, but I haven't even heard anything! Unless that's the let down?
Every one of these is a rumor. The crescendo of rumors occurs whenever there is a chance that new products will be introduced. This and that "solid" rumor will come and go with nothing being announced. Don't put much stock in any of them.
The worst part about this whole "announcement" business, is that regardless of what the new camera is, we won't be able get our hands on it for almost a year.

Why do you say that? A lot of products, especially cameras, are available within a few months of the announcement and most well within a year.
Right, I don't understand that either. Lot's of product are available rather quickly. Nikon is a smaller company than Canon (and has had it's share of natural disasters this year),yet, there are reports of people getting the recently released 85mm 1.8G and the new D800 is released next month, the D800E in April.

There have been some production delays lately with the long tele lenses, but new camera models are usually available within a reasonable time from the specific dates. A replacement for the 5D II might have a higher backlog than some cameras, due to the relatively low price and pent up demand for higer FF resolution.

Thanks Peter! Glad you think I'm stupid too. Always nice to know that there's multiple people with the same opinion (My wife I'm pretty sure thought so when I blurted that out).
The conversation went along these lines. I was telling her how I was planning on purchasing a pair of 1DIV's, however, that plan may be put on hold. She asked me if they went up in price or if something happened (with my paying off my bills). I told her that Nikon released a D800 with pretty remarkable specs, and that Canon is "due" to release a new body as well. I said that there has been a lot of hub-bub about it being a full frame sensor, with an impressive 7-8 frames a second, an increased megapixel count, 2 card slots blah blah blah.
I said to her that, while I photograph combat sports, and I really like the 1 series quick black out times, and impressive 10 fps/better buffer, I'm also a portrait/wedding photographer...and I'll be honest, there's not a lot of money in combat sports photography. So that said, I may consider a pair of whatever body comes out instead of a pair of 1DIV's, if the price is right.
I said that "on Fred Miranda, he said that it's the 30th of Feb".
I could tell by the look on her face that I struck a chord, and I almost realized it as soon as I said it, but it was made all of the more concrete when my wife said that there's no 30th.

I just remember when the 5D2 came out. They were difficult to obtain for quite a while. This camera promises to be more exciting, so I feel like it will be even tougher to get your hands on one.

Aren't you both pretty much saying the same thing Almost a year Vs within a year.
Either way it's not very fast and with Canon rarely in a few months.
The 1DX was announced in October. There might be a handful....maybe..... in March. It will be probably be pretty darn close to a year before they are readily available. Canon is pretty slow getting new items to market even after they announce. Painfully slow compared to Nikon. It seems on average Canon takes six to nine months just to get reasonable inventory out.

Exactly. The 1Dx was announced how long ago? And we don't even have a price for it yet

I said well within and I was speaking generally (lenses+bodies). Regardless, and as noted, bodies are usually released within a couple months of an announcement. Higher end products usually take longer...the rebel, XXD, 7D and 5D series will take significantly less time to hit the shelves.

1DX was anounced with availibility in March. It is only February, so what is the problem? Would you have preferred they wait until 1 month prior to availability? Then people would be complaining that they just purchased the old model, etc. The Nikon D800 was supposed to be anounced in October, and has been delayed 4+ months already since the factory was in a flood area.

The first D800's come from the Sendai factory in Japan; Nikon "have plans" to open a production line in Thailand in due course.
