The finely terraced rock over which the river flows is called the Nonesuch Shale. It is composed of sand and clay particles that were deposited in a shallow lake that covered this area. The round potholes in the riverbed form where an eddy current continually swirls pebbles and sand grains in a circular path.
An early fall morning as the clouds rolled in from Lake Superior. I felt blessed to be there to see the vibrant color, beauty, and experience pure tranquility. It is good to slow down and enjoy the Lords creation.
Great shots, I like #1 the best for the unique subject matter. Good shutter speed for the flowing water. I guess I need to get back up to the other end of the state, eh?
Nice set. I like the misty feeling with brilliant colors of the second shot. The first shot is nice too. Any chance you took a vertical comp of that? Might be interesting.
Looks like you were there in the Porkies a few days before I go there. Love the atmosphere in the Carp River valley. It was nothing but windy for me so no clouds or fog ever developed in the valley or over LOC. The shot of the potholes is well done. I need to get this shot again, but when I got there the trees on the right were mostly bare with brown leaves. Oh well. Maybe this year.
Nice set showcasing some of the UP's splendor. I get up to the Porkies twice each year camping. Once in the summer usually at the mouth of the Big Carp, and then once in the winter. I was just there three weeks ago and there wasn't enough snow to snowshoe. It is an absolutely beautiful place.
Thanks for the kind words Ear Mountain, Ben Podolak, and pedpole. Here are two more
Manabezho Falls - Upper Peninsula Michigan:
Probably my favorite waterfall in all the Upper Peninsula. I've photographed this waterfall in every season except Winter and it looks different each time. This time I happened to catch it just as the trees were beginning to display their Fall colors
Lake in the Clouds - Upper Peninsula Michigan: An early morning view over the Lake in the Clouds as the fog drifts in from Lake Superior. This would turn out to be the only sunlight of the day as it was overcast and raining. Not a sound was heard, truly was a moment of pure tranquility.
Thanks for posting these. I'm new to the FM forums, and I've not seen many photos of the Midwest. Excellent representations of the under-represented Midwest!
