Forgive me, couldn't resist using the recent thread to garner extra views for mine But this is my take on a moonset/sunrise. Another title that was in the running involved some sort of cheesy pun, since these are from Half Moon Bay, and this was a moonset, etc.
I went to Half Moon Bay this morning, not looking up the moon details, and was shocked/pleased to find that a nearly full moon was setting just as sun was rising, and I could get it in my viewfinder.
I also saw a bunch of people way up on that cliff, with lenses way bigger than mine. I was confused, though, because it didnt look like they could see the moon from where they were standing. Then it hit me -- they were watching the Gray Whale migration, not the moonset.
Anyways, hope you like these. They are both a single exposure, but that doesnt mean I didnt selectively dodge, burn, etc.
C'mon, you can do better that that. We want to see one of those whales jumping over the moon! (Did anyone on the cliff resemble Mr. Lik? If so, we just might get our wish. )
I quite like #1. The reflection interacts with the other lines in a nice manner. Nice colors and tonal scale too. Forgive the nitpick, but if I ran the zoo I'd crop about an inch (depending on monitor size) from the bottom. There's a little too much flat, dark sand down there for my eye.
You're supposed to say that there were snipers on the cliff with precision telescoped rifles trying to deny you the opportunity to capture this once-in-a-lifetime convergence of astronomical and tidal phenomenas... but you would not be denied.
Anyway, these are very nice, believable images Matt. My favorite is #1 and I think I would crop off some of the sky on top.
Very nice shots, and I'm really glad someone got a shot like this today. I went outside my home about 6:45 and the moon was so bright against a lightening sky from the sunrise. Wish I'd had time to grab gear and get somewhere for a shot, but no such luck. Thanks for sharing!
matt,
really nice shot. depending on how near you were to pillar point/mavericks, the big lenses might have been on hand to capture a rather large swell that brought surfers from around the world.
dvb
this is ON pillar point. I did notice the swells were extra huge this day, and by the time I was leaving (only 7ish), the area was already filling with surfers at a ridiculous pace. So, you are probably right, maybe that is what they were doing. Ive heard about mavericks, but never remember what time of year it is, and also always thought it was further south than pillar point... shows what i know! guess this was it?
That first one really grabs my attention and the combination of the misty sky and the nice reflection is nice. Nothing wrong with #2 besides being posted alongside of the other one
Interesting narrative to accompany the scene so far in the thread.
you might want to be particularly careful, matt, shooting this location on higher winter tides in the early morning. this kind of thing (http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/localnews/ci_14399709) is not at all uncommon during some of the bigger swells. mavericks is the premier big wave surf spot on the entire north american coast with waves of such power as to be almost unimagineable!! the season is roughly nov-mar although earlier & later north pacific swells do happen.
