Hello,

I caught the photog bug these past few years and was not in the game when the older 28-70mm was around. For those of you that have used it, is this an accurate review?

If so, it seems that the 28-70mm is not a bad alternative to the 24-70mm for the hobbiest who is not making money on his shots.

On a side note, I wonder if the new 24-70 will be that much better than the current version! It does have an extra aperture blade

The new 24-70 if it matches up to the MTF graph will be a huge step up.

I can't speak to the review as I've never tried the 24-70 but I was fortunate to have a very good copy of the 28-70, sharp with great colour and contrast. If you can find one, you should at the very least save a few dollars off the current 24-70 and perhaps even more when the new version hits the street.

From what I've read, I'd say the negatives are no 24-27mm and also no canon service.

I have the 28-70L, it has great IQ. However, I don't like the build quality. Its front focusing group wobbles.

I have 28-70, amazing color and contrast and very good sharpness, even wide open. I have not however pixel peeped the corners. It really is a great lens.

I have a 28-70. Between the fact that it's a very good lens, and I don't use it much (too heavy as a walking around lens, so I mostly use the 24-105 f/4L), I've never been tempted to buy a 24-70, and certainly feel no compulsion to spend what the new version is going to cost.

I'm happy with the 24-70L and never been interested in the 28-70L, losing those extra wide mm would be a negative.

I don't know if the 28-70 focuses as quietly or quickly as the 24-70, which I find excellent. Perhaps some others familiar with both models can comment.

I replaced my 28-70 with a 24-70 a few months back and struggle to tell them apart. I'm sure there are specific times when one will have the advantgae but generally they're on a par with each other.

IMO the 24-70 is better than the older 28-70. Probably because it has a more good glass like aspherical and UD. The 4 extra mm on the wide side makes a big difference also

I have owned both lenses and can tell you that (of the examples I've owned) the 28-70L is optically great but the 24-70L is a notch more "solid" in the build department. Also, those extra 4mm at the wide end do make a significant difference on FF if you shoot wide. There is something special about the FoV at 24mm on FF!

Hrm... I took out the 24-70 today and personally don't think the extra 4mm makes much of a difference.

24mm from 28mm is not that significant. Just few steps backward, you got yourself 24mm already. 14mm from 18mm is another story.
