I will just echo what everyone has said, learning how to do flash photography opens up a world of opportunity and it would certainly be useful for what you're doing. I'd also get a wider lens, but go with the cheaper Tamron/Tokina/Sigma alternative, buy a new camera, flash and a good tripod. Sell the lens you have now. Or, go with a 5D and flash.
