Spent some time last month in Northern CA on business. Had a chance to make a quick early evening run from San Jose over to Pacifica. Picked up some early color looking north over the pier, and waited to see if the view to the south would yield any late color. Nothing spectacular. But, not a complete bust.
Beautiful shots! I like them both, but I do agree that the pier gets lost a bit in the second one. Were these taken on 1/18? The 2nd one looks similar to conditions I had at Gray Whale Cove.

These were, indeed, shot on 1/18. I was thinking of going over the previous evening, and instead stayed in my room trying to recover from jet lag. I regretted it. The sky on the 17th was absolutely amazing in San Jose.
I have also darkened the pier a tad. Hopefully this work better.

I was mad at myself for missing the previous sunset as well
