p.1 #1 · queensberry sales kit or sample (or both)?

I'm putting together my plan for sample albums, and plan to offer a high-end album through Queensberry. For those who have the sales kit, is that worth it beyond a sample album? Or is it enough without the sample album? Or should I have both?

Thanks, Ron

Ron, I have no input about Queensberry. I just want to give you my opinion a little bit about being new to the wedding industry and sample albums. The fact is, when you just starting out, it is almost impossible to get a client who is willing to pay over $1000 more to get a nice album. Take it slow. I have a nice album sample from BRI that I really hate. First of all, my work has changed significantly so the photos in the album are not that good. Then on the top of that the album is too expensive for my clients right now. I am just not able to sell it. Just take it slow. Shoot some weddings first, get amazing photos, then start thinking about sample albums. I rushed things and ended up with expensive album samples that I cant sell. Try not to make that mistake because album sample is still expensive even with the discount.

I am debating BIG time whether or not to do the same thing. The only problem is that the albums are SO FREAKING EXPENSIVE. I really wish they offered a better sample price.
UGH
I don't know the sample kit is nice because it has all the different papers and pages and leathers. But that is not the same as having a book. Exact conversation I had with the boss last night (the wife). I still have not made up my mind yet.

Totally. When I was flipping through Brian Hatton's sample QB, I was sold. There was no way I could NOT offer it to my clients. It was a natural extension of my brand.

I've since ordered another QB sample, a press matted album. I have another one on the way. They're almost as sexy as the Duo.

Very nice! I appreciate the feedback, Inku.

Robin, not ordering the albums next week. Putting together my plan. My expectation is to go full throttle selling 2013 weddings by Sept/Oct. I'm going to be in a location that will cater to higher-end weddings, plus have a built-in base for it through my other photography. Like you said, right now I have to shoot some weddings so I have something to show for it. Working on that as well.

I appreciate your response.
Ron

Yep, the expense of the sample itself is my concern, plus if the email is right, their samples are only 25% off, not the 40% as with most album companies.

They recently had a 50% off sample deal. It's over though. For me, the cost of the sample is well worth it.

The sample kit is required. You cannot place an order for a QB book without owning the sample kit first. They usually offer it at a discounted rate at Wppi. Oh and if you buy the kit at Wppi, they include a steep discount on a sample as well as free design.

Not true anymore. I ordered my first sample before I bought the sales kit. If you buy sales kit, you can purchase up to 3 samples per year. Without the sales kit, you are limited to 2 samples.

Interesting. I was told last march I couldn't place an album order without possession of the sample kit, which I really didn't need because I almost never meet with clients in person. so I bought it.

Other reason I didn't need it is because I only planned on offering basically one option. Duo book in one of three colors with white mats and only one title option and no imprints or other cover options except plain.

I was also told it was mandatory when I was @ WPPI.

I bought the sales kit (or whatever it's called) and will likely never use it.

They designed a duo but I never ordered it as I just don't see being able to sell it PROFITABLY at this time. So that was a nice waste of money there... sales kit without sample = you'll never sell one for sure.

I just ordered a sample without having anything. No sales kit. I also got in on the 50% sample sale.

BTW, Inku and Brian made me want to throw away every sample I have except the RedTree samples. I love those too.

i'm thinking about getting my youngest son's birth documentary in a queensberry. inku, question about the the QB press matted album. do you mean 'matte' as in no luster finish or 'matted' like there is a photo mat? also, how does the press paper render black and whites?

Chuck, it's a matted album that use press paper instead of photo paper. Their printing is amazing. So good you won't care that it isn't photo paper...

It's a matte like as in matted overlays over the print. It's sexy. I chose the tintoretto paper the first time. It's really nice and the ink takes well. It's kind of an art linen type paper.

I have another sample coming in all black and white prints on Kodak Endura. I'm super excited to see it. Should be here next week.
