p.1 #1 · Indian Peaks Area

One of my last shots of the day. I have a large print made from one of my earlier shots on lake Mitchell taken a couple hours earlier. This was taken on the way up to lake Brainerd. Not sure I like the composition. I was looking for something to take advantage of the light. I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

Thank you,
Paul W.

I like the drama in the sky and the low perspective, but on my screen the forested hills are pretty dark...If you could darken the FG and lighten the hills, things might balance out... My two cents.

You devoted half the image to the sky. Unfortunately it is just not that interesting and not able to carry the image. The midground is really overly dark. Next we have the foreground with the light colored rock that keeps pulling in our attention. Again, not interesting enough and there is no relation between the rock and the sky. Sometimes rules can be broken to advantage. Not in this case. It would have been better to avoid having the horizon line bisect the image. If you want to make the sky a major part of this image then I would crop out the foreground to above the green shrub.

Hey Paul, I think Mitchell Lake is well after you drive by Brainard Lake (http://resourceanalysis.com/fishing/fish50/f50_v.html)...I go up there all the time Anyways, I like the sky & colors and sharpness, but there are a couple of problems I have with this. There is no foreground to raw my interest...it is pretty boring, the image is a bit underexposed, and looks like you added a little vignetting at the top....this is pulling my attention away from the kool looking sky towards the foreground, which is lacking a little on the interest scale. I think you can improve this by redirecting the viewer towards the background and cropping up from the bottom a little. It is a nice scene, but you can fix it and make it work...and by no means is this a wasted shot...one of the reasons why I spend so much time up there.

Thank you guys. I think I might just crop this into a panoramic, that should take care of the foreground issues. It is good to hear everyone's thoughts.

This was taken on the way back from a hike to lake Mitchell and Blue lake. They were my main destinations. I drove from the trailhead and parked near Brainard lake. Walked partly through the field and then took this and a couple other photos. I believe this was the last weekend the trails were open in 2010 before being closed for snow.

One challenge I run into is composing with a lens this wide (21mm in this case).

Thank you everyone,
Paul
