No questions a bought it. This is my dream camera and the price is much better than I had expected. Before I order I want to see a lot of comparisons between the D800 and the D800E, I am really not sure which would be best for me.
I voted maybe, probably going to wait for the reviews.
Does the price for the grip seem really high in comparison to grips we've had in the past? $616 versus $250-$300 for the D300/D700 grip and the D7000 grip.
I'll eventually want to upgrade from my D700 because:
- smaller
- lighter
- better DR
- Better AF sensitivity
- a bit higher resolution
- weaker AA filter
- no blooming or streaky noise with over-exposed light sources
- yes, yes, video - last on the list
But it will be a while before I can afford to upgrade from my D700 unless Nikon comes out with something else, like a D700s (doubt it!).
Until I saw the detailed release information, my answer would have been "no". But after seeing some of the sample pics and reading more about it, I have upgraded to maybe. I am anxious to see how they perform once they are out in the real world instead of prototypes in the hands of some of the best photographers in the world.

+1 I will keep my D700 and buy a D800 to pair with it. I too am curious as to the practicality of the E version.
I must say, it's impressive for such a high-resolution camera, small-pixel. Skin tones are better than I initially thought. I'm seeing only a slight difference between the D800 and D800E - and one that can be re-created in post by boosting sharpness a tad. Given the limitations of shooting with the D800E and the need for additional special software, I'm not tempted it.
The D800E no way. There will be lots of people bad-mouthing it when it hits the streets, proclaiming it defective in spite of all the press about the differences. I don't have a need for sitting in front of a computer to try to correct Moire, etc.
As for the D800, maybe but it won't be right away if ever. I have a D4 on order and that is going to suit my needs better. When a D300s replacement comes, that will be a likely replacement for my D300 as I'd like to have one Fx and one Dx body. The D400 or whatever it's called has to be enough of an upgrade over the D300 and by that I don't mean just a D300 loaded out with better video. There has to be substantial gains in AF, metering and IQ of still images.
I see problems with the high MP cameras coming. All but the best glass won't perform well and even then your technique must be flawless. OTOH, the D800 is a heck of a lot cheaper than a Pentax 645 digital.....
