Micro 4/3 will finally have a 35mm equivalent option that can obliterate the background. Safe to say its the fastest lens with its AOV ever made, at least, I've never heard of one faster than f/1.2 before. Also allows you to switch between aperture clicks and silent stepless aperture on the fly, which would be great for video.

Very cool, although I'd say "obliterate" the background is a bit of a stretch, as we're talking about around a 34mm f2 equivalent on a 35mm sensor. Either way, cool lens.

I second snowboarder, why don't they make this for nex too? Argh. 26/1.6, or whatever it will end up looking like, would be sweet beyond measure.

I'd imagine because the lens would be significantly larger. It's already a big lens for m43, but would likely be impossible to scale up without getting huge. They could make a 24mm f/1.2 though.
By 'obliterate' of course, I meant get enough blur to compare generally with fast full frame 35mm lenses, which has been an area m4/3 hasnt been able to match up with the larger sensors...now they can. Pricey, but no more so than the Canon 35L. A lot smaller and lighter than the Zeiss 35/1.4, which would have similar construction materials.

In the right conditions it doesn't take even that to have the background blurred beyond recognizability. Sometimes contrary to the intended purpose. But I wish the Voigtländers have AF; I'm not sure what's keeping them (they have the protocols since they are the members of µ4/3 alliance and since they are really made by Cosina they may have AF - that company had AF lenses released under their own name back in the day). Of course 90% of the intended target audience will swallow this even without AF/AE but personally I fall into the remaining 10%.
Yeah, I know I've got you all here with my whining about the perceived need for modernity. I'm... eh... like profusely sorry?

The reason it's not for NEX is twofold:
1. It's designed as a 35mm equivalent lens, not a 26mm equivalent lens. I would imagine the difference between moderate wide angle and a wider lens at f/0.95 would be significant.
2. If you design a lens for the APS-C image sensor and port it to Micro 4/3 (like Sigma has done with their m4/3 offerings), it defeats the entire purpose of Micro 4/3...namely smaller lenses. It also would mean the focal range wouldn't work as well.
If you want a lens with similar AOV and depth of field for your NEX, go buy a 24mm f/1.4. You'll only get a little more DOF compared to this with the same AOV. You already have the 24/1.8, and it's got AF (of course, there's a full stop more DOF vs this, but still).

From reviews I've seen the 25/0.95 is excellent. Great center sharpness wide open (though with soft corners), and sharpening up in the corners when stopping down. At f/4, it is really sharp across the frame.
It has a little dreamy look wide open, but with high resolution.

Why not spend the r&d for m mount lenses which can be used for a multitude of systems instead of just one? I guess designing for such a small image circle simplifies a lot of things.

Indeed. I would say that designing a full-frame 17.5mm f/0.95 lens may be impossible, at least to get a decent optical design, and the lens would be HUGE, which defeats the whole point of a Micro 4/3 lens.
I would MUCH rather have a design that was made just for each individual sensor...it results in better lenses.
Remember that the design of lenses is a function of both the image circle and the focal length. This design is similar to designing a 35mm lens for full frame. If they had to cover the APS-C image circle, they'd now have to design it like a 24mm lens for full frame. To cover a 35mm image circle, they now have to design an ultra-wide.

ctein recently gave a negative review of the 25mm/.095 on the online photographer (Mike Johnson) blog. ctein knows his stuff, though obviously your views may differ.

I haven't used the 25/0.95, but most reviews I've seen are quite positive. It's not a perfect lens, but image samples I've seen look pretty darn good to my eyes.
