p.4 #1 · Let the games begin (D800)

I want to see actual video performance as well. Only thing that really motivates me to upgrade from my d700

I expected that people would be complaining that it only shoots 4 fps without the grip.

It's a shame it's only at 4 full frame, but I understand why it's 4 - at 4 fps it's still pushing 80% of the datarate the D4 has. The 1.2x crop has 5 fps, better but not great.

That's why I'm not that bothered. It's unfortunate it doesn't have faster FPS, but there's a real reason for it, not just an arbitrary crippling. And it's a weakness that can be worked around relatively easily.

36MP - half of the existing lenses need to be trashed.

Nikon already did that around 2004-2006, when they decimated their existing film-camera based lens lineup. Currently Nikon has a MUCH more modern lens lineup than Canon. I would say that any FX lens released since 2007 should handle the D800 very well.

Interesting Bit from imaging-resource:

It should be noted that the D800E does still include a low-pass filter, but it functions only on a vertical axis, and its effects are cancelled out by a second low-pass filter layer that reverses the effect. We're currently trying to determine the reason that the low-pass filter layers haven't been removed altogether, but speculate that either it's necessary to retain a low-pass filter in the image path so as not to alter the camera's optical properties, or perhaps that it serves a secondary purpose as an infrared cut filter. Either way, given that its effects are reversed by the secondary...Show more

"Currently Nikon has a MUCH more modern lens lineup than Canon."

Leaving yah boo sucks fanboism out of this, Canon have been upgrading most of their important lenses over the last few years. Just now the 24-70 Mk2 and new image stabilised 24mm and 28mm lenses. With the exception of the Nikkor 14-24 G its hard to see where Nikon exceed Canon lenswise. Can Nikon sell you a zoom fisheye, or autofocus 50mm f1.2, or a tilt shift 17mm.

But clearly now body resolution is a different issue. This new Nikon is really going to raise the bar for the 5D3!

with the grip and AA's it does 100% the data rate of the d4... it needs the voltage.

I think this will affect the price of used D3X's more than D700's. I'm keeping my D700, but would eventually like to add a D800. I will wait until the dust settles. I'm also curious to see how the D800E stacks up to the regular version.

+1 - Could be why B&H doesn't have any. Who would pay 8K for 24.5MP now with the D800?

Agreed. I don't feel bad for recent D700 buyers, but I do feel a bit bad for recent D3X buyers.

Will be interesting to see if the MB-D12 grip will come down in price - it's $600 at this time, and I don't immediately see any additional functionality vs. the significantly cheaper MB-D11 (D7000 - for approx. $220) and earlier versions.

If they would only sell it with the D7000 logo instead of the D800....

I can't wait. This will be a quantum leap in the quality of my fredmiranda posts and my facebook shots, which often look awful with my D700!
