p.1 #1 · Need advice on buying elinchrome

Hi
This has been a great source of information for me. And for that I thank all the helpful members of this forum

Now I have some problem, you see I live in a place where availability of studio lighting is impossible. However I got some way to get some elinchrome brand of lighting gears in my hand. In this case I need your kind advice to know what should I buy.

I have some experience in off camera lighting since i regularly use off camera lights in different weddings (yes I am a wedding photographer but this is not my day job) with 2 430 ex2 and 1 580 ex2. I am now seriously willing to try studio lighting.

In this case what lighting should I buy with what modifiers? I am thinking of investing high amount of money since I will not have the opportunity to bring the lights and modifiers frequently. Initially I am thinking of 2 RX 600, 1 RX 300 and 1 RX 1100. Should I go for RX or Quadra? And what modifiers? can any one help?

regards,
Sadat

It depends on what types of images you are shooting, portraits, sports, outdoor, fashion, etc. It also depends on how much portability you need. You can't beat either model but if you mostly do indoor work then the RX-600's are great. I have several plus an RX-300 for hair, or when I need a shorter flash duration. But if you are doing mostly outdoor work then the Ranger is RX-AS if fantastic with an A head. The Quadra is very good too unless you need to overpower the sun a lot. As far as modifiers go the 39" Deep Octa is my go too modifier with and without Deflectors. One or two small strips are great also and the 17" beauty dish is great indoor and out for something small and easy to set up. If you do much fashion or full length work and have the money the 74" Octa can't be beat. No matter what the RX system and Skyport is wonderful. You probably want the 8.25" reflector with grids as well and at least one umbrella reflector. For quick and easy portraits and real portability, the 41" Varistar and wide angle reflector are cool too. Enjoy.

Sadat, you are in Bangladesh. Go for the Ranger RX AS kit. It's heavier but you'll need the power and versatility for shooting mid-day sunlight.

The Deep Octa is a good choice, as is the Maxilite for modifiers. The EL Large Octa, 74" is great for fashion and indoor soft light, but hard to use outside.

Here is most of the gear i own: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=10498706&posted=1#post10498706 if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Save the RX600's for studio use.

I have gone through some stuff and now I have it down to what I use the most and what works for me
2 600RX's, 1 300RX. I love the 1200 but it's really heavy and a pain to use, and it's a lot of extra weight and cost for one stop. I've learned to use what I have to over power the sun when needed. I picked up a dirt cheap octa and loved it. And I used it outside a few times and was able to overpower the sun with the 1200. Now I tend to use smaller modifiers more efficiently and stay away from the huge softboxes. In fact I would say that 75% of my work uses the smaller deep octa as the main. It offers an amazing quality of light and is super versatile. The 600RX powers it nicely and when used correctly it can overpower the sun at noon. I've also had an elinchrom ranger, it is phenomenal too. I thought I would use it in the studio but I hate working without a modelling light. I sold it and now just use my 600RX with a vagabond instead. If you shoot outdoors a lot get the pocketwizard tt5 thingy, it's great. If you only shoot in studio than don't waste your time on it, it's easier to just set your lights and shoot.
This is an unedited images from sunday, taken with the 600RX at about half power, pretty bright outside but not high noon sun.

I would wait and see if you're going to need the 1200 before buying it. I tried a quadra and thought it was stupid. The adaptor to use regular elinchrom modifiers sets the strobe tube back even farther.
I have an use
2-600's
1-300
calumet reflector with grid-cheaper than elinchrom
27" softbox with grid-awesome
27" deep octa-my favorite modifier
Mola beauty dish-probably going to sell because I prefer my 27" deep
white and silver umbrella
strip box
photek softliter
alienbee huge ass plm -probably going to sell because it is huge, a pain to use, and not my style.
vagabond

Nice sane kit. The softlighter is pretty great modifier for the dollars!
