p.1 #1 · Fantasy - Oregon Coast

Not sure what I want to call this one yet, but right now I am thinking of 'Fantasy' since this beach looks like something out of a fantasy novel to me. Rugged rocks, seastacks, and huge waterfalls are just otherworldy at times.

Here are two possible crops for the shot, for the second I also cloned out the tip of the foreground rock in number 1. I think I like the first more, but would love to hear what other people think of the crops or any other critiques.

I like #2 slightly more. Very nice photos. The waterfall is magical in this photo.

Just going back and forth between the two, I feel that the rock in question in No. 1 takes some interest away from the seastack. The second image has a very supportive foreground and the corners are handled just right. Only thing I might try with the second image would be to maybe just maybe bring down the upper left portion.

Very nice work.

Thanks for the comments guys. Patrick, I agree the foreground rock in #1 takes some interest away from the seastack and the waterfall, but by adding in that rock there is a nice natural triangle formed between it, the seastack and the waterfall. And at least for me, that flow keeps my eye in the image and creates a better sense of depth. However, as you said, the seastack and the waterfall are the best parts of the image and the rock does pull some attention from them. That is the struggle I had between the two crops.

Thanks again.

Scott, after looking them both over, I believe I like the second one a little better, as my eye seems to flow through the image much better, where I keep getting hung up on the FG rock in the first image. That's my eye anyway. Both really nice man!

Hi Scott, I'm going against the trend here and choosing #1...I like that rock, and it allows you to place the horizon a bit further up the image that balances it all better for me
cheers Andrew

I'm leaning toward #2 as well, in spite of it being very close to 1/2 and 1/2 on the comp side.

Hi Scott,

Very cool! I saw #1 first and liked it, but when I saw #2, I liked it even more. Definitely more balanced.

Like Jim, when I first saw #1, I really liked it. But when I saw #2, I liked it, too. At first I thought I preferred the first photo, but I am ending up preferring the second. I agree that the foreground rock in 1 does take a little away from the seastack, so removing it eliminates that distraction. For me, though, the biggest benefit of cloning out the rock and cropping out a portion of the bottom of the photo is that this removes the "empty space" water in the lower right portion of the photo. I also personally prefer #2's lower horizon line.

I like #2 the best as I feel the rocks are more uniform. The rock in # 1 distracts me a bit. Absolutely love that water fall in the background. Beautiful photo.

Not that I know anything.. but I like the first photo best as that rock kind of leads me down a path to the rest of the scene... out and over the other rocks.. to the large rock and on to the falls...

I like #1 more. It just feels more natural, and the rock on fg is not only cool looking, with nice reflections, it also sort of points towards waterfall.

i give the nod to #2 just slightly. I like the less squarish ratio and the fg seems to have better balance than havnig one rock sitting lower and off-center in the immediate fg in #1. Both are excellent, btw

2 for me as well.....it may just be me but I think you could also take a small crop off the top and cut the sky off the top right, that really brings the eye back to the middle.
Really nice shot either way. Love the colors and a beautiful scene.
