p.1 #1 · Canon DPP followed by PS7

Got a problem. I take mainly aviation pics in RAW. Most images are shot using the Canon 70-200 2.8 glass. I use Canon DPP, convert to jpeg, then finish up with PS7. What I can't seem to perfect is the sharpening process using this workflow. How much should I sharpen in DPP and how much extra sharpening in PS7?

You should not convert from RAW to jpeg. Jpegs are for final output where size is more important than quality. Output the files from DPP as 16-bit TIFFs for further processing in PS if that is your workflow. I would not apply any sharpening in DPP. PS has more sharpening options and of course there are specialized plug-ins.

EBH: Sounds good. The problem is that I submit the shots to a couple of aviation-photo websites who demand them in jpeg form...

In DPP, convert to TIFF. In Photoshop, once you've made all the changes you want and done your sharpening, then save a JPEG (using Photoshop).

you can also use "transfer to Photoshop" in DPP menu
just turn sharpening off (0) before transfer
then complete edits in Photoshop, sharpen and save as JPG

I sharpen as the last step in the workflow because the amount needed varies depending on output size and whether I'm preparing files for prints or reduced images for screen.

FWIW - I did the DPP > transfer to PS7 routine on a PowerPC Mac before upgrading computers and it was cumbersome and slow. Using CS5 with Bridge to organize the files and Adobe Camera RAW to do the global corrections is a world of difference.
