p.1 #1 · Gizto GT 3541LS too much tripod for me...

Do you guys think the GT 3541LS is a bit much for, my heaviest comb, 1Ds MK II and 70-200? My mostly used combo is 1Ds MK II with my 16-35 and 28-70. I'm currently using a G1227 which is great but the 3541 folds down smaller and it's lighter. I use my tripod for landscapes and macro shots of watches. My gut tells me it's more than I need but it's also telling me to get one

Thanks guys!
Chris

Are you sure the 3541 is lighter than the 1227? If you want something which closes smaller, how about the 2541? You'll get the new G-lock legs, which are a big improvement over the 1227's, and if you're not planning on any longer glass, a 2-series will be fine.

Thanks dcains! I actually didn't have my 1227 to compare but it felt lighter. Maybe it's my gut telling me it lighter If i do get longer glass it'll most likely be either the 300mm f/4 or 400mm f/5.6.

I had a 300mm f/4 and the 1227 was fine. Had no problems holding it up.

I've used both of those lenses with my 1-series bodies on my 2540LVL and an RRS BH-40, and it's plenty stable. In windy conditions, or if you want a gimbal head, the 3-series will be better, though.

I've never had a problem with the 1227. I guess I'm just trying to talk myself into spend money, that I just came across, on gear

BTW I have a Markins base plate and M10 on my 1227. I would guess the M10 will look tiny on the 3541LS.

If you're really itching for a new tripod, how about the new RRS 2-series? It's around the weight of a Gitzo 2, with the stability of a 3.

I use the 3541LS with the bh-55 for a 5dII and maybe a 70-300L. Is this overkill on the tripod? sometimes but it's nice to have anytime I need to shoot in less than ideal conditions.

I'm not a fan of the 4-section tripods, but the current 3-series is enough for most lenses up to 500 mm.

It's a great tripod, I highly recommend it. 4-sections or not it's sturdy..

I still have my old G1228 with no center column, a Markins base and a Linhof Profi II head. A poor man's systematic. Over a year ago I bought a 3541LS and A-S Z1 ballhead and it's night and day. You can never have too much camera support so I say go for the 3541LS.

You'd better be pretty quick about it though. It has been discontinued and replaced by the 3542LS which has a much higher load rating. However the 3542 is a 1/2 lb heavier; that's 13% more weight... You have to wonder what Gitzo are thinking. Are they thinking?

You may still be able to get the 3541LS on Amazon.
