In the studio, I end up using live view most of the time and would really like to have the image on my notebook computer. Is this possible? Link ?

Yes its possible. Use EOS Utility with the 5D2 connected to your notebook via a USB cable.

You can also tether to Light Room.

Didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

File > Tethered Capture > Start Tethered Capture

Connect the camera first and make sure the camera drivers are installed.

Turns out I can't use EOS utility because I bought my 5d ii used and didn't get the cd. The various hacks for running eos utility updater without the cd don't seem to work on windows 7 64.

Lightroom does capture which is a cool feature but doesn't do live view. I think the capture will come in handy. Maybe I want to use HDMI for live view?

jzucker, it'll work in windows 7, but the registry you're looking to edit is probably in a slightly different location.

I.E. instead of [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Utility] you'd be looking for [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOS Utility]

Thanks for the registry tip.

It works great. Wish the 5d had more focusing points. Looks like I'll still have to manually focus for macro shots.

The next issue is the usb cable. With a stock usb cable, I can't mount the camera vertically on my tripod with my kirk l-bracket. I need to find a right angle USB cable.

I have been using this app on my Droid X phone and my Droid tablet with a 10 in screen for macro stuff in the field. It is not free, but the cost of $US8.51 is in most folks budget. It has a lot more features than just a straight up tether and the Android devices have longer battery life and are more portable than a laptop.

One thing I like is I can focus using the app at 10X on the touch screen of the Android device instead of touching the camera.

Why don't you contact Canon and ask if they can send you one? I can't see why they wouldn't even if you bought it second hand.

Being able to zoom in, and focus remotely (using Breeze Systems DSLR Capture Pro) is the biggest single reason to shoot tethered macro/tabletop photography.

Shooting tethered w/ LR doesn't provide any interactive camera controls. Using EOS Utility or DSLR Capture Pro provides full remote control of the camera from the laptop.

Hi Chas,

I was shooting tethered with EOS utility when I wrote the last posting, not LR.

Regarding autofocus, the problem is that for macro I need more granularity than what the 9 focusing points of the 5D can provide so I'll still have to continue to use manual focus. However, it's still a huge plus to be able to see the live image on a larger screen. Particularly for macro focusing accuracy

DSLR controller requires an android device with USB host capability, something I don't think the kindle fire has.

Yeah, I should have realized that before posting. What android tablets have usb host capability? Archos and Acer? Who else?

USBfirewire has whatever angle you need. I used this one with a 5D2 and an RSS bracket. Sturdy wires & excellent customer service over there.
