Greetings,

I am debating between SB-700, Metz 50/58 models to be used with D7000.

Can any of you provide any recommendations? $320 is the most I am willing to spend on a flash unit. I don't do any serious work anymore, but may use it on a wedding or two...

SB-700 would be my choice out of those, but you could save money by buying the SB-600 or SB-800 (preferred) on e-bay - usually in as-new condition because most people just don't use them much after they buy them.

I've bought and sold several flashes on ebay without any problems.

I would go with the SB-700, definitely if you want to use it off camera. The controls are so much easier...

I looked for a used SB-600 as well but the used prices jumped after they were no longer available new and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Biggest downside of the SB-700 IMO is that they ditched support for older TTL for film cams. Works in manual only...

In your budget you can get Nissin Di 866 Mark II which is a very powerful flash, similar with SB900 and full compatible with Nikon CLS. This would be my option for a one flash solution.

Check out the Sigma EF-530 DG. I don't use flash often so can't give you all info, but I've had it for just over a year and it works great.
I got it on Amazon for $150, but see it's up to $199 now.

I haven't used the NIssin or Metz, but I'd go with the SB-700. That assures you no real compatibility problems and the flash will work as intended.

That said, the SB-700 is a great flash anyway. The controls blow away the SB600 and SB800, though I loved the power and slave options of the SB800 (though really I never found the SB700 having not enough power for me)

SB-700 also includes WB communications with the body when you put on the included hard gels (nice touch), which is nice if you use them. Also includes a sto-fen - great little bonuses.

SB400 small , light , Cheap and it works. Don't need any of that fancy stuff.

If all you need is simple on-camera flash in landscape orientation it's great, but it is also very limited compared to the SB-700.

Just get the SB-700 and don't look back. It's a great little flash, packed with features and a nice user interface.

Just wondering if the SB-700 has the same on-off switch as the SB-900? If so, it's a hassle. I find myself grabbing the SB-400 whenever possible to avoid that SB-900 slider switch.

Get something that can use the CLS function of the commander flash. You're wasting your camera's features, otherwise.
Used SB800 is a good choice, but they are overpriced on the used market.

Another thing to think about -- An Alien Bees 400 and stand. Off camera flash, great light, lots of power. Couple it with a Vagabound Mini and get hundreds of flashes on one charge.

I'm using an SB800 with my D7000... Didn't buy it used, though, so I can't comment on current price. I've had the SB800 since '04.

I've used a 700 on the D90 and D700. I can't recommend it enough if you want automated functions.

I was able to find a used SB800 for $300 on craigslist. I haven't tried a SB700 so I can't comment on it. I like the 5th battery feature on the SB800. I used 2 - SB800's in the slave mode for a corporate Christmas party and the batteries lasted all night shooting several hundred pics.

I to am trying to get the best flash for my D 7000 and am trying to decide between the SB600 & SB700. Does both flashes allow for the CLS function? Whatever that is. My main use would be for flower photography. Would like to use off camera to be able to move around to get the best lighting on flowers. Thanks

I would recommend a SB-800 used or if you have the money get the SB-910. I have both and they're both great!
SB-800's are amazing!

I suggest sb-600's...i have an 800 as well, but my 600's do the same thing, and they're cheaper...and yes they will slave with CLS...

The only thing i like more about the 800 and others is the PC port on the side, which can easily be worked around for off camera work with a hot shoe sync cord...and the fact that sb-800's 28's 25's 80's etc will show you flash output distance as it relates to iso, and aperture...pretty handy i find, even though on the 800 you have to dig into the menu to change the ISO...
