Hello everyone,
my brother wants a DLSR to start with, not somethig specialized, just a body for the walking around, trips etc. instead of a compact camera.
I told him to buy the 1100D or a used 450D, instead of a more expensive 550D, 600D or xxD series, and buy a better and maybe more versatile lens than the kit 18-55.
My question is, for a beginer who later his skills and needs maybe will be more, which is the best solution lens to start? A new 18-55IS (coming with most kits), or a 18-135IS or 17-85IS? The last one is quite more expensive so he will search for a used one. Other lenses like 15-85, 18-200, 17-55 are just way of his budget.
So, from the 3 lenses i first mentioned, which is the best solution? Asking for IQ mainly, and other cosiderations i should have in mind.

If he wants to learn photography then he'd be a lot better off with a tammy 17-50 (non-VC) and an 85/1.8 for about $800. If he just wants better than a P&S, the 18-135 would be a better choice.
In either case, a flash is an excellent tool as well - the 320 seems nice for the price.
The 18-55 is an excellent starting point, even though it's the el-cheapo kit lens. You can always add a cheap 28/35 prime, or get a used one from Adorama or B&H. The FM buy/sell board also has some good items.
I just bought a used Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 lens for $220 from Adorama, which I bought as a cheap travel lens.
Have owned all three. I would vote for 18-135 IS. most people, when they first start photography tend to gravitate towards the longer focal lengths. In addition, he wont be much in to lens changing, at least at the begining. The flaws of 18-135 IS, are not ones which he is likely to notice when he is starting out. of course if his budget is really limited, he can save the 170 dollars difference in price (average used) towards a flash.

i think i will tell him to go for the 18-135, and if money it's not enough, just to buy the 18-55 to start with. He will see what he needs in the future.
