Dude. Really nice work. One thing that's a help when you want feedback is to number them.
You really have a good handle on balanced lighting. You also got really nice, natural expressions and looking at this set gives a very friendly feeling for this young man. I also love the variety you've shown here, lots of different poses and expressions and all love them looking quite natural. You also did a great job incorporating your environment.
Now for some nit-picking.
In general, did you do some skin smoothing on a few of these? Especially in 8 and a little in 9? Looks a little over the top to me.
I'm not sold on the crop in 4, makes him look kinda small. A bit too much headroom.
The jumping shot (I think it's #7), I'd like to see more room around him.
My fav is the last one. But I'd be stoked if I could turn out a set like this. I'd never guess that you've only been doing this a year. I suspect you're gonna do very well :-)
you caught me again David a little too trigger happy on the skin smoothing, I will definitely agree. He had quite a few blemishes and even asked me before the shoot to make sure I got rid of all of them. (he begged haha)
I think I will go back and redo 8 and 9 a bit to not make it so noticeable.
I agree on the jumping shot, I got lazy and kept the 70-200 on, and that didnt give me much room to show anything else, but he wanted a goofy jumping shot.
#2 & #4 - Backgrounds. Bright spots behind him. Move around to get the "best" background.
#5 - Lens distortion, but then why not? It does the job.
#7 It's a great leap and you lit it well. Again the background is an issue. Like neighbourboy said - more room around him. I'll add that the distraction of the protrusions on the right are an issue. And if you can pull it off, have the building (no sky) as his background. Sounds like a tall order to me.
#10 The beam is lined up with his head. Usually, that's a no-no. I'm trying to decide if this is an exception. Anyone care to comment?
great set.
nits: skin just a bit over the top in a few, whites of eyes in #8 jump out at me as a bit strong.
#10, the beam is noticeable, but not a show-stopper. just wish he had feet in the frame. I'd like to add I have this 14, but have never got a shot I like as much as yours.
in #10, I agree the feet would have made it a way better picture but I chose to crop them out b/c they were BADLY distorted from the 14mm rokinon, b/c they were near the bottom of the frame, and they looked like clown feet. That little 14mm beast is taking some getting used to.
I do agree the skin smoothing is a bit too over the top and too noticeable on alot, I will tone that down in the future.
Number 8 was tough for me, if you see in some of the other pictures, he actually has a brown spot to the right of his iris in his right eye. I felt it destroyed the image from the angle I took the picture from, and editing it out wasnt as easy as I thought it would be.
I appreciate the C&C guys, its the best way for me to learn.
Do you see that weird color cast on his jacket? That was in the original image, and I wasnt sure how to get rid of it, so I thought maybe if I added the flare it might make the picture make a little more sense and not draw so much attention to it.
I tried alot of things to make it not so noticeable, but it ended up not meshing well with the rest of his jacket. Any ideas on how to fix that?
And canerino, its funny you mention that, he actually thought he looked a little feminine in the first picture I posted, I definitely need to lay off the smoothing.
