p.1 #1 · Recommendation for Olympus-compatible lens

Hi-
I'm giving (or rather selling very cheaply) my E-420 Olympus to a friend and am trying to find a good zoom lens. The camera currently is fitted with the 50mm f/2 macro lens (a fantastic lens by the way), but she wants to get a decent zoom lens also. I shoot canon professionally, so I'm not that familiar with Oly lenses, other than the 50mm. Also, I notice that Oly lenses are quite expensive relative to Canon or Nikon for similar specs. My questions is, Is there a good 3rd party lens made for Olympus anyone can recommend in the range of $300-$500? The only affordable Oly lens is the 14-42 kit lens, which does not have the good depth-of-field for 4/3rd sensors - I guess it would require at least an f/2.8 max aperture. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks. -Ben

p.1 #2 · Recommendation for Olympus-compatible lens

Hello,

The 14-42 kit lens is rather good actually for a kit zoom. There's also the kit tele-zoom 45-150mm, it's a excellent performer for the price. The other and way more expensive zoom options are the 12-60mm and 14-54mm wich have a extra 1/2 stop, greater IQ, and better construction (weather sealed).

On 4/3rd reduced sensors is difficult to achieve DOF control with normal lenses, even a f/2.8 is equivalent to a f/5.6 on full-frame...

When I had a Oly E500 I was using a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and loved it, but the focal lenght can be a bit strange to most (60mm equiv.). There's also a Sigma 28mm and 24mm (both f/1.8) or the ultra-expensive Leica 25mm f/1.4.

All these are big and heavy lenses that contradict the idea of a having a small and light dSLR like the Oly E420. If I had that camera I wouldn't hesitate to pair it with the tiny Olympus 25mm f/2.8 pancake, they seem they were made for each other.
