p.1 #1 · Sheffield Mills Eagle Reunion This Weekend
I plan to go to Sheffield Mills, Nova Scotia, Canada for the 20th Annual watch of the Bald Eagles this weekend.
Any tips, such as lenses to use, how far the birds usually are, gear to bring along, when to arrive at the site, etc. would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Saba.

i believe the farmers throw the dead chickens out between 8.00 and 10.00 .. so that might be the best time to be there.. i don't know how far you are from the birds because i've never gone to it .. i'm about 100 miles from there

Hi,
Last weekend the birds weren't very cooperative, and tended to stay roosting in the trees, with an occasional sortie near the crowd of photographers close to the dead chicken bait. So you should bring the longest lens you can, a good tripod, perhaps a stool, and lots of patience! The timing is unpredictable. Last year the birds behaved the same way till late afternoon (the light is better then anyway) then there was a flurry of activity.
I live nearby, so I'm sure I'll be there at times.

Hello Kenney,
Thanks for your response. You live in a wonderful part of Nova Scotia. Used to go around there when we came over from Prince Edward Island by Ferry. It is also near Pugwash where some of the greatest scientific minds used to go once a year to discuss world affairs. As far as I know, these meetings ended with the end of the cold war.
We should get together sometime and go shooting together.

Hi Richard,
Thank you for your input, it is very helpful. I hope to see you there on Sunday morning. My car is a grey Camry with New Brunswick plates and I will have a huge OPTICON tripod. I have left some of my big lenses in Florida (returning to Sarasota around mid February). I will have a Nikkor 300mm f4 and a TC1.7x teleconverter. My wife and I will definitely bring two chairs with us. We are staying Saturday night at the Slumber Inn in New Minas.

Hi,
Sorry - I was to counting raptors at Grand Pre in the morning, but I got to Sheffield Mills around noon, had a pancake breakfast, and when I went out to take pictures, I got lucky, with a brief flurry of activity. I posted what I considered the best of them on this forum yesterday (3 Eagles from Today). Hope you had a good time.

Hello Richard,
Sorry I missed you. I would have loved to meet you in person. I had left by noon. Just before noon, a feeding frenzy occurred and most of the chicken were gone (eaten ). So I headed out on the six hour drive to return to Fredericton. Did the farmers put out more chicken later in the day?
Stopped at the "Just Us" roastery (near Grand Pre on the Evangeline trail) to get a cup of their famous coffee on the way home.
Please keep in touch, either on this great forum or PM. I look forward to shooting with you and Kenny during the summer when I return from the beautiful South.
I will renew my FM upload membership tonight and post some as soon as I can.
Cheers
Saba
PS. Your three shots from yesterday are fantastic!
