p.1 #1 · What LR and Photoshop setting for Facebook?

I provide low res files along with the high res.

I noticed that when I upload the images to facebook it's hit and miss. Sometimes FB butchers the files and they look pixelated. Other times they look great.

Is there a trick to it?

I always export from LR with 900x900 setting and standard sharpen. Works fine for faceobook, just remember to check the High Quality box below your upload.

Hey,

Don't post on fb much, but I think the standart 900 px wide (for word press www ) should be OK.
And this set on people forum is just awesome- I see where did you get your new avatar from.

Wojtek.

Standard facebook image size is 720 pixels on the wide side. Just add some sharpening and remember to upload the photo "high quality" to facebook.

Um I am not sure what the standard FB size is ... I think larger than 720 now... but you def DO NOT want to upload the high quality ones. That is only if you want to upload high resolution files that are HUGE and will display that way.

For FB I export out of LR at 980 wide at 72px with sharpen for SCREEN on.
That is all you really need to do.

If you upload a high resolution shot i.e. something that is 300px instead of something that is 72 the FB downsizing algorithm will rip it to shreds. I spend a good amount of time educating clients about this.

I thought the max size was 960 wide for FB. I usually do 960 @ 72 and check the high res button.

What does the "high quality" setting do? I always thought it's for larger images. As in if I would want to have a full resolution image there. Then it would offer a download link there.
Does facebook have a maximum file size? Perhaps facebook only butchers the images that are larger than they should be?

I used to save at 720pix at about 82% in LR. Now I do 900pix with 85% and that's when I notice problems.

PS... Thank you

Hey Dmitri

I'm not sure what the high quality option does. I export for my blog in higher quality than I need to I imagine but I use LR at 1200 pixels 150 ppi and around 70%. I think they look good? I'm guessing a bit because I'm not on my normal computer right now. I also use a TRA action to sharpen for web on those photos. I was shocked when I went to my parent's house and saw a 4x6 of my daughter they printed from my facebook profile and it looked great.

I'd love to hear what someone who REALLY knows the best settings for web/facebook has to say so I too can adjust my settings.

I am telling you guys.
http://www.dreamgrow.com/facebook-cheat-sheet-sizes-and-dimensions/
I export at 980 wide and 72px...why because that is what all internet photos are no matter what.
I then set the sharpening setting to screen in LR. If you are doing some thing else you are messing it up. Trust me. That is why 90% of peoples photos on FB look like butt. Goes for blogs too. You need to find the maximum px across on your blog and make the long side export that our of LR with sharpening set to screen.
End of story.

Could someone please show me a screen shot of where this high quality check box is in the export manager? I do all of the above but I can't seem to find this high quality check box...?

I am pretty happy with the quality of my facebook pictures, so I wrote a blog post about it here: http://www.miclaphotographyblog.com/2012/02/08/facebook-photo-quality-optimization-lightroom/

It was a couple updates ago. It has been 900 pixels for a while, and will be going much larger soon (if they haven't already).
