I have a friend who thinks I am so good with wedding photography (obviously she doesnt hang out here). She keeps asking me questions and I became kinda like her mentor. Her work is not that great but she managed to book a wedding where she is able to offer me $300 to 2nd shoot for her. How do you feel if you were in that position? She shoots with a cropped Nikon, 50 mm and a couple of kit lenses.
Is it gonna be a cool wedding? in a cool location? will you be able to use your images in your portfolio... If there's a reason to do it, i'd say go for it.. if not, then don't.
You've been offered a job opportunity, and as such, a professional should know their role and their place. Take the work if you want, but don't undermine your immediate "employer".

Rich, even if it is a cool wedding.. something still bothers me. I dont think she is capable of culling and editing 1000+ photos. Even the edit she does on family photos are horrible.
Depends on how much you want to help this person. If you do want to help her, then do it...you do not have to put your name on anything there if you think it will not well reflect on your name

the only downside to this is she is going to use the images you shoot to further her business, it is likely your images are going to outshine hers based on what you have said so far. the bad part about this is when she markets with your images, if she can't deliver on the same quality long term, her business can end up in trouble. do you think you would want to work under this arrangement long term? if you can benefit from it and get paid and the rest of this doesn't bother you, then you could go for it, make sure whatever you guys decide to do that you have some kind of agreement in writing about the use of the images, etc. between the two of you and how to handle client issues which I am assuming is all on her.
Talk to her about how she intends to use your images. If its clear that you will be appropriately credited, that seems okay.
Ask her about her expectations, does she want 900 photos delivered to the client, or could you produce a "small" set of 150-200 photos that you would edit? I think if you talk to her you should be able to figure out if there is a scenarios where you would feel comfortable. There might be a nice compromise in there. The only thing I wouldn't do is give her you raws and have her decide the best, edit them, and advertise them as your work. Good Luck

First, I certainly would NOT pay a second to deliver a limited number of shots that were already edited. Nor would I also want to cull/sort/edit photos, if I were hired as a second. Also, what if she delivers 250 of his photos and 50 of hers?
If they're bad I wouldn't want to be associated with them whatsoever.
If they're good but maybe cheaper or whatever, I'm not too proud to second-shoot if it's worth my time. Can't use my images in their portfolio etc. but obviously they would go to the client.
You do it or you don't. Maybe she sucks, maybe you suck. Likely you both suck. Do it if you want to, just remember you're the 2nd camera. If you're not in the mood to tutor her on the fly then don't answer her questions. Play dumb. I get so tired of being asked what lens I use for whatever I just say the one that came with the camera.and working with/for someone is way different than having your name associated with them. You don't have a partnership. You do your job and she hands you a check. Enough to fill up the car abd take the family to dinner.

I would never second shoot for someone like that, ignore questions, play dumb, and deal with that just for a couple hundred bucks.
Taking my family to dinner is not worth my sanity.

Who said I will do that? Just saying she went over her head and she is nowhere close to being ready.
