p.1 #1 · Landscape with Birds - California's Central Valley
During the last weekend of January I joined a friend to photograph migratory birds in California's Central Valley, starting at Woodbridge Road near Sacramento, visiting the Cosumnes River Refuge, and ending up at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge.
While I did come back with some plain old bird photographs, I also shot some landscapes, often focusing on the large expanse of winter sky. There is at least one subtle element in each image...

Thanks, everyone! :-)

Really like these a lot Dan makes me deal with my issues of not having a 600mm to do bird shots.
I like that thought. I think we all - me, too - can get a bit caught up in the idea that bird photographs should fill the frame with a single bird. They certainly can do that, but there are other ways to shoot birds as well. I had several approaches on this shoot. One was to find a good landscape scene, compose a photograph of it, and then wait for the right birds to fly through!

Always wanted to do a wetlands bird scene...
Now is the time! In my neck of the woods (San Francisco Bay Area) the migratory birds are easy to find if you head out into the delta and the Central Valley, going to more or less any of the numerous wildlife refugees. If you haven't seen this annual phenomenon, don't miss it!

Dan,
Nice set as always. As shown I think I also like #2 the best the colors are very nice and the comp with just the right amount of swamp and trees at the bottom is perfect to my eye. However if I could see the last shot larger and could resolve the specks more into birds I might really like it as well. #1 is very beautiful but somehow just feels unbalanced to me with the tree and bird on the right.
In any case thanks for sharing - I always make a point of looking at all your postings and I often learn something along with seeing some great scenic shots, especially when you go into similar detail that you use on your blog.
