Oooooh. Hmmmm.
I have no idea what that might imply but OK.
So, in all the K-x will take better images? Even though the K-7 has the much better feature set?
Huh... this might explain why both cameras are currently selling for the same ( $350 body only) here.
It still sucks tho! I want the K-7 features! Pentaprism not mirror, 900k LCD as opposed to 250k, 3 inch LCD - not 2.5, More OVF Magnification, Version II of the image processor, weather sealing, better look and feel!
Sigh...
Ya think I would actually notice the difference in ISO performance and DR?

Similar situation with Nikon and probably others. The D7000 has better dynamic range than the D300s, D3 and D3x (slightly). I assume the D4 will be better. You have to pick and choose the features that are important. We are still in a situation where sensor improvements are coming faster than the traditional product cycle times so you end up with situations like this where the "Better camera" is not so simple a choice. I am interested in Landscapes so for me the best Nikon available is the $1200 D7000 and not the $$$ D3x

Yep, in terms of sensor performance the K-x utterly stomps all over the K-7 (and K20D). The K-x was where Pentax switched back to Sony sensors from the Samsung sensor used in the K20D and K-7 and the benefits of Sony's far better sensor technology immediately became apparent. Note that the K-7 is only a little older than the K-x and the sensors are of similar vintage (the K-7's sensor comes from the K20D and the K-x's sensor debuted in the D300 at about the same time).
Quite frankly the K-5 is merely a K-7 with a Sony sensor and a little speed added.
Note aside from DR, the K-7 does perform very well at low ISO's, it's only really weak once the ISO range starts heading upwards.

FYI, I never bought a K7 and stayed with my K10D until the K5 came out because the dynamic range of the K7 was so inferior to the contemporaneous Nikons (D300). I always liked the colors of the K10D anyway, but it was noisy even at ISO 400.

Interesting comment, considering I found the D7000 to have several stops less dynamic range than my 1D Mark IV. I find it hard to believe that Nikon's other cameras are even worse...?

Yeah, the K-7 used the same sensor as the older K20D. It was an upgrade in terms of ergonomics/size/weight, but not much in terms of IQ. Still a fantastic camera.
The K-x came a little later and was the trial balloon for Pentax's use of Sony sensors. The K-5 followed suit some time later.

Molson
DxO rates the D7000 has having more dynamic range (13.9 vs 12 evs) and color depth (23.5 vs 22.8 bits) than the 1D mark IV. The Canon does better for iso (1167 vs 1320)
There is debate on the real meaning of the DxO ratings so who knows.

There is no debate about the real meaning of the DxO measurements as they are repeatable and verifiable, but the "rating" should be left for what it is: A necessary general publication circumstance. "Filler statements" for the ignorant public demand. I strongly doubt that any of the real talent behind the scenes at DxO care much for the "points" system. Whatever you need is there in the data - if you can't interpret the data, go somewhere else. Like DPR or something.

Interesting comment, considering I often find that people that make such comments are totally ignorant about what the word "DR" really means, and often very selective about the stuff they compare. But I guess you mean "shadow noise at ISO's higher than 400", because then you would be correct in stating that the 1D4 is better. But you forgot a decimal point in the statement, the 1D4 is about 0.5Ev better in the midtones, and about 1Ev better in the deep shadows at ISO6400.
At base ISO the D7000 is almost two full stops better than the 1D4 in DR. Adjusting the DR minimum quality to a slightly more strict definition (SNR >6dB) the D7000 is about 1.5Ev better. In the mid-tones (18% gray) they're almost exactly equal.
At ISO200, things start to even out, and at ISO400 the 1D4 is in a very slight lead. From ISO800 and up the 1D4 is exactly as much better as the difference in sensor area would imply.

I find it all just a little strange tho. I mean their release schedules are more important to them than keeping their flagship models on top? Or I guess they're considering other features and attributes of the camera to be enough compensation to justify the release? It doesn't seem right to me though I place a lot of import on DR and ISO performance - so maybe I'm abnormal.
