So, this is pretty frustrating.

I know there *must* be a way to have my pictures fill my iMac 24" screen as a default when opening.

I know about the F key and Maximize Screen, etc, but those just create a window that fills the screen and a smaller image with huge grey border around it.

Any thoughts?

You can keep hitting F key three times to cycle thru your predetermined workspace colors, which can be modified by CTRL+K interface tab. After you get black color, hit CTRL-0 for fit on screen, or CTRL-1 for 100% view. Alternatively, you can use CTRL + or CTRL - to get there.

thanks, but will this change the default opening mode to full screen? Or would I have to do this to each image?

No, when you open Photoshop, it defaults to standard screen mode with the other two modes disabled.

ugh... I cannot believe that a program as powerful as PS doesn't have a mode to automatically fill the screen.

Seems pretty basic, especially since you can do so after an image is open.

Microsoft Word is also a very powerful application. Can you configure it to go directly to full screen mode when you open it up? I was wondering that too since last time I used Word was more than 15 years back.

Here is one way to do it using an Action and the Script Event Manager:

I am not sure it will work in 100% of the cases (transfer from LR, for example) but it might be worth trying to see if it meets your needs.
