Shot first Girls Basketball game in a long time last night, haven't posted in a long time. We upgraded the gym lights so it's not quite the dungeon it used to be. Wish I brought a 2nd body with shorter glass.
Good efforts. Looks like there is some light in the gym. It's nice to see the shooter in the air on the second shot. So much of the girls BB I shoot is played feet flat on the floor. The WB or maybe it's just the brightness of the upper walls gives the 2nd shot a bit of a grey-out feeling. You might try playing with the color balance.
As for lenses, I carry a small over the shoulder bag with a max of three lenses - generally just two plus the mounted one. I've developed the habit of "using a lens for a quarter." For example, I generally shoot the 2nd from as high as I can get in the stands (which isn't all that high) with a 135 f/2.0. Other quarters I use an 85mm f/1.8 from about 1/4 of the way up the side line at the home basket. (I switch sides.) Some times I just wait at the baseline with the 50mm f/1.4 trying to get wide yet close in shots. In general, I'd say I get the best keepers from the 135 but that may be influenced by the fact that the 135 is a Canon L and the others are "lesser glass." I'm always on the move and at the end of shooting two games (boys and girls, about 3 hours) I'm dead tired and my wrists hurt. Still it's great work.
Really appreciate the feedback Robert - I thought about taking a few lenses, actually laid out the 85 and a 14 which gives interesting shots if you can get under the basket. The walls in the gym are actually light yellow but if I balance on them it takes a lot of the yellow tint out of the gym. I'll try bumping saturation and contrast. We had a boys game immediately after, will post a few of those later.
