Post Hurricane Irene sunset (winds were still vicious, I was getting rocked all over, even with IS on I barely got stable shots, the tail winds were actually worse for us than the main winds). One of the most spectacular sights I've seen it just went from one amazingly cool thing to another.
(They look a bit different in the original wide gamut format, sRGB kinda got rid of some of the bright pinks highlights and so some of the details and textures disappeared in the cloud bands, some of the colors shifted in tone a bit uglier since they original at the proper brightness and saturation don't exist in sRGB, few programs support advanced gamut re-mapping so you just live with what they do, etc. boo to smugmug for banning images that are not in sRGB!)

my experience after 1 year usage is very positive. this zoom was and is a surprise.
optically, its excellent, better and more versatile than the 70200 f4is (which i tried).
sharp wide open (which is so important).
completely usable at 300mm (i dont hesitate to zoom up to there).
great for portraits at the wide end. in fact, stunning here. phantatstic resolution for such a lens.
(i had the old 70300is and the new one is simply in another league).
its so useful for events where you need to be rapid and need something like 70-300 (or 90-380 on APSH).
i shot a carnival, circus performances and even some outdoor hockey matches with it.
its really sharp.
the best comes now: its my "golden solution" for landscapes and nature (great for details !) and walkaround trips.
believe me, i prefer primes, but this small zoom delivers a very fine and balanced optical quality for such applications and it shines on both my 1D3 and 1D4.

I read a couple of previews. I think about purchasing this lens and would love to see your favourite pictures as samples. Please feel free, to give me some comments about your experience with that glas, too.

Just acquired this lens, took a few shots through the den window (it's 19 degrees outside). All shot with Canon 1D4, ISO 800, from 70-300mm, Av mode, Spot metering, f/5.6, handheld:
