p.1 #1 · On mountain ski snowboard strobe photography

Was wondering how to shoot skiers and snowboarders on a mountain with strobes? Anyone out there do this?

I've got some light weight stands, umbrellas, soft boxes, other diffusers and some older canon flashes that I can attach some PWIIs to.

What I want to shoot is a "fun race" through some gates for a local group of skiers/riders. I thought using strobes would help freeze the action if the day turns out to be cloudy/overcast/dark.

Any thoughts? Hints? Tips? Recommend readings?

Thanks!

gonna be hard with a pw and a 1/200 sync speed using small canon strobes. consider radio poppers and high speed sync, or some big lights that you can blast +2 to +3 stops or so over ambient so you can minimize ghosting. and shoot late in the afternoon. these images were produced with 3 or 4 580EXII units with external battery packs and radio poppers, probably around 1/800 of a sec though i can't remember.

Just spit balling........

Could you use a ND filter to lower your ambient so you were shooting at your max sync speed in order to get more efficient usage out of your strobes? I love shooting hss, but hate the lost in power that comes with it. For me its at least 2-3 stops.
