Wow Doug, way to go! These are really looking good! 2, 4, 10 and 12 are grabbing my attention a little more than the others but all are great

Very nice pictures of a nice birdie. I had no idea one could find them in WA state in winter ? What on earth do they feed on ?

Thank you Peter. I was surprised when I first saw a hummingbird in the snow a few years ago. We had about a foot of snow on our deck and a poor fuscia plant sitting on the deck waiting to be disposed of. We happened to look out the kitchen window and saw a little hummingbird feeding on the frozen plant!! Ever since then we have seen them regularly. We have to remember that western WA really is pretty mild in the winters and that snow is fairly rare.

I have a saying though, "you don't deserve the summers here if you can't take the winters".

Really really enjoy the humid set Doug! Don't see much of Hummingbird together with snow. Love the natural light images and the last pose with the hat is totally awesome.

Khai

Thank you for the comments Khai! The natural light ones are nice, though it took a little PP to get rid of the noise. I was really lucky with the snowflake hat, I'll be the first to admit that!!

A great set Doug. All are very nice with the portrait standing out for me. The last one put a smile on my face ~ Ron

Thanks for commenting Ron. I've learned a new conversion/processing tool (not new to most, I'm sure), that along with a lot of pixels enabled the portrait zooms. The last one was a pure treat.

I would never have expected hummers to survive in such weather. What the heck are they eating to stay alive? A nice looking set!

K, thanks for commenting. The weather isn't like what is depicted most of the time. We believe they turn to small bugs and such to supplement in the winter.

Great looking captures....

Thanks Jim (the Corvette guy, I'm guessing). They are here most winters, we just need to add snow!

Great pics of this flying jewel, Doug! Yeah, they're pretty territorial, which is why my parents put down their feeder -- they thought he was being too aggressive! Sorry to hear about the bad weather in WA, it'll be 80 degrees and clear today and for the next few days here in LaLaLand.

Best wishes,
Steve

Thanks for the kind words Steve. Sounds down right hot Steve!!! We average three days a year over 90. Last year we went nine months between days breaking 70.
We just tell people it rains all the time to keep the population down....

Really nice work Doug!!! At least your hummer poses, ours just eats and zips away Really nice sharp shots and well executed. I really like the comp of 2, maybe clone out the upper right corner The last one is a hoot, way too cute!

Tim

Tim, thank you for taking time to comment and for your kind words and suggestion. I fixed #2, it took some time, but I found the offending branch out in my wife's lilac and cut off the branch. I hope we don't lose too many spring blooms there. Actually, just a little different crop took care of the situation.

We once had a puppy like your hummer, open the door and she would run off down the street. We eventually got her trained to sit when told. This little hummer is really tolerant, he has a few "favorite" perches and let me approach easily, especially during the snowy conditions.

Thanks Don, the hummers and snow really make for an out of the ordinary opportunity. It was better than cabin fever.

Last one is my pick

-Tim

Thanks Tim, it is really not that rare up here. We normally are pretty mild and have a few hummingbirds stay over, add a little snow and voila! you have it.

I was so fortunate to see that scene in the last shot, quite fun.

That must be a very unusual experience for them Doug.
Great shots!
Love the last one.
Martin

Thank-you Martin for the comments. As mentioned above, there are a fair number of hummingbirds that winter over in our normal "mild" winters. Add snow and the stragglers offer some great photo opps. Glad I posted the last one, it seems to be a favorite.
