Every now and then I think about adding the 10-22 so I have a true wide angle on my 7D, but I keep wondering how much I'll use it. I tend to shoot on the tele end more than the wide end, and for me, indoors the 24-70 goes plenty wide enough.

It's pretty nice that your boss is letting you borrow his lens.

Indeed it is.

Yea, eventually I'll probably pick up a wide angle, but then again I'm also going to switch to FF eventually so that 24-70 will be enough wide angle for me once it's on a FF.

The 24-70 is a very nice "people lens" on a crop body. It's sweet spot is around
40mm-50mm focal length and 6-12 feet focus distance. Beautiful rendering in
a classic studio setting.

Lots of good 24-70 shots in here:

It's a cracking lens even on a crop body. Its my main lens on a 50d. I sold 17-40, 35 1.4 and 85 1.8 and moved to the 24-70. It's a very flexible lens and 2.8 is fast enough for my needs, no regrets. I am not a huge fan of super wide so 24 works for me. Coupled with any of the 70-200 its combo that's hard to beat in terms of pure flexibility.

I totally agree with the flexibility when combined with a 70-200. Granted, I'd rather shoot primes for the image quality, but when your chasing kids around nothing beats a zoom for flexibility. Again, some may argue that 24 isn't wide enough on a cropper, but for me, and others, it's plenty wide. Any of Canon's L's are total workhorse lenses, with fast enough focus that any issues have either been my error or because of lack of light/contrast.

If you also add the 17-40mm or 16-35mm then the 24-70mm will not have to be wide enough on your crop camera. For shooting indoors or landscape outdoors I would want the 16-24mm range with a crop camera.

Do your own experimentation with your existing lens and take a look at the pictures you have taken to see how often you used the 17-24mm portion of the 17-50mm zoom's range. Easy to look at folders of images in Bridge as it can sort by focal length used for each picture. If 40% are in this range it would indicate a likely problem with only a 24mm or longer zoom. If 5% are inside the 17mm to 24mm range then it may be something you will never miss. It depends entirely on you and what you photograph and how you choose to do it. What other people do should be of no consequence.
