Anyone ever replace the protective objective element on there Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS? I was wondering how much does it cost? According to the the-digital-picture.com website, it should be relative inexpensive but that doesn't mean much to me.

I see the part on ebay occasional with a Buy It Now price of around $350. I'm sure it's more from Canon and you'll need to add labor. I suspect total parts and labor from Canon is around $500. Repairs like these are a good reason to be a CPS Gold or Platinum Member.

How bad is your front element? Mine has a few nicks and coating flaws, but I can't see how this is impacting the image at all. I've contemplated the same, but am not wanting to be without the lens for a month.
FYI... I believe that Midwest Camera Repair in Chicago has Canon certified technicians and they will do the service and a clean/Lube/Adjustment check for under $500.
I've looked into it, but am in the... "if it aint broke..." mode.

bruce
I believe this is for a non-IS version but I may be wrong
I think you're correct, the link is to a non-IS part. However, I was just trying to say that when I see the part you're looking for (IS part), it sells for around $350. I didn't check ebay before I posted the first time, nor did I mean to imply the part you're looking for was on ebay at that time. Sorry for the confusion.

I hope you didn't take offense to my reply to your post. In no mean am I being condescending.

Okay, I just got the quote from Canon in Irvine. It is $370 with CPS discount. It's a bit expensive so maybe I will use the lens as it.
I realize this is an old thread, but would like to know if this was with gold or platinum discount?

I'd call Canon parts and at least get a quote on the price. I think the part number is YN2-1211-000 but have them double check. It's not a hard replacement - if you're handy it takes less than an hour. Last time I ordered one the part was about $120. but that was a while ago.

Seriously? I am pretty handy but would need a "how to" to get it done. Any idea where to find instructions for it? I wouldn't mind tackling this and I'm also thinking that at some point in the next few years before the lens goes out of service, to buy a spare front element to have in the sack in case it ever takes a tumble.
