p.1 #1 · Epson 7900, Mac OS Lion, and Enhanced BW Mode

I recently got a new Mac running OS 10.7 Lion. Had been running 10.6. After downloading and installing updated updated Epson drivers for my Epson 7900, I no longer have access to the advanced B&W printing mode in the print dialogs. (And, yes, I have selected paper and ink combinations that should work.)

Anyone else run into this on the 7900 or similar printer? Any solutions?

(My initial contact with Epson support was not very helpful.)

Thanks,

Dan

From what I've read, I think you now have to choose Printer Manages Color to gain access to ABW. What will they do next to screw up printing when it should be getting easier and not more difficult.

yes, it appears that in the latest drivers, we've lost the ability to use ABW Profiles and now must let 'Printer Manages Color' to use ABW.

For me, the Advance BW option was still grayed out when I did try letting the printer manage colors...

Since this thread might end up in a searchable archive, and someone with the same issue might end up here looking for an answer...

I finally talked directly to an Epson tech support person and after some unsuccessful attempts we came up with a solution that allows images to be centered on sheet paper, as they were under OS 10.6 with the older drivers.

Basically you need to create a custom paper size for the sheet paper size you are using (in my case it was 8.5 x 11 and 13 x 19), and manually enter top, bottom, left, and right border sizes. The sizes that the Epson rep suggested were .12 for left and right and .56 for top and bottom. .5 for top and bottom also seems to work.

There are still some new/different things in the print dialogs for this printer under OS X 10.7 that seem like backwards steps to me. One is that you can no longer simply select the Advanced BW mode from the normal print dialogs when letting Photoshop manage colors - which is the normal and correct way to do things. Instead, for Advanced BW you must let the Printer manage colors and then go through some slight menu gymnastics.

I just upgraded (?) to Lion, and I found this forum while looking for a solution to another print size problem. I upgraded the firmware on the 7900 (now using Version 10), and the problem I have is that I can't use the custom size management for sheet material. (This problem was evident under Snow Leopard, too) The paper size selection has priority over the printer setting, and if I select any custom size, the printer setting goes to roll paper.
I need to manually reset the print size any time I wish to use a custom size. You may ask why I need custom paper sizes for sheet material at all, but I need to center a bunch of different size images on sheet paper, and the standard sheet size presets (which don't cause the printer setting to go to roll paper) have default border settings of .25 in for top and sides, and .56 in for the bottom, which the printer requires to hold onto the sheet.

Advice: DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR FIRMWARE! And don't let an Epson tech do it if you have a service call. They will try to, but here is yet another example of newer not necessarily being better.

I suspect that a new driver can be made to work with the new firmware. What a royal pain!
