p.2 #1 · Canon slower than Nikon at releasing new models

I know what you mean, but Nikon seems to consider the D300S "professional", since it's placed in that category on the Nikon UK website.

This "professional" branding is interesting. I have a Canon Professional Still Capture PDF brochure, since removed from Canon's websites, which features cameras down to the EOS 60D. In fact, the brochure includes this statement:

"An improved viewfinder, a number of new in-camera creative options and filters, plus HDMI output for viewing images on an HDTV all make the EOS 60D invaluable for the professional photographer."

That position didn't last long in Canon's marketing. It was quickly replaced with this subtly modified version:

"An improved viewfinder, a number of new in-camera creative options and filters, plus HDMI output for viewing images on an HDTV all make the EOS 60D invaluable for the evolving photographer."

You can still see this line here, for example.

"Professional" is a meaningless term in this context, but the manufacturers go to great lengths to imbue it with meaning it cannot have!

I see exactly the opposite. The D300 was released in November of 2008 and shortly after the D300 and the D700. Three years later the D4 has been announced but is not shipping and no word on the D400 or D800 cameras. In the same time period Canon released the 50D, 60D, 7D, ID Mark IV, 5D Mark II.

Within the next three months Canon will be shipping the 1DX and a 5D Mark III. At the pro end Canon has done a much better job than Nikon at releasing new models. I went from the Nikon D2x to the Canon 1D Mark III to the Nikon D3 and expect my next camera will be a Canon, either the 1DX or the 5D Mark III as the D4 provides very little in the way of tangible benefits for still photography over the D3.
