Very nice set Steve with 3 and 5 being standouts for me.
Martin
Thanks Martin! Of course, it took about 500 shots to get maybe 20 keepers, or at least captures that I would even consider worthy of posting. Thank the gods for digital, I could NEVER afford all that film back in the old days.

Hey Steve
Nice to see ya shootin' the Sandies, must be wild to see soooooo many as I have seen only two at a time
Comps are a little 'square' for me, would love to see more pano-like on these flyers.
#3 and #4 are my picks, and a nit to clean up the bottom of #4 for more impact to the flyers!

John
Hi John, and thanks! I see you live in Downey, about 20 miles or so from me. Guess the closest place we can find Sandhills here is the Salton Sea; I just had a report that there's a group of 'em there. Nothing like Whitewater's 40,000, though.

Beautiful images, Steve. I like the warm tones in these
You also did a great job with these IF captures. Images are well in focus and show nice detail.
#3 is on top of my favorites.

Thanks, amico. The light was wintry, low on the horizon, and with the Draw's earth tones gave everthing a nice warm hue. And as far as the IFs, I filled a 16GB and 8GB card card and, being of course my harshest critic, was only truly satisfied with these captures. Thank the gods for digital, for I could NEVER have done this kind of shooting with film! For that matter, I probably wouldn't be into birds, much less BIFs.

Lil, you can have nothing BUT fun when you're facing 40,000 Sandhills and are armed with a 500 prime. Wish we had some place like this near our area!
Best Wishes,
Steve
Steve nice set of photos. This year there are only about 16,000 cranes using the White Water Draw Wildlife area. Water levels are down and the birds are more scattered and to the north. Estimates for all of Arizona are around 34,000. You came at a good time.

Hi Karl my friend, thanks as always for the constructive, thoughtful and friendly critique. You are of course quite right on all these points, particularly the more rectangular cropping to enhance the "wide-open country" aspect to be found at Whitewater and so the Sandies don't seem to be so hemmed-in by the borders. (And I'm not referring to the Mexican/AZ one only about 20 miles away from there.) In #4 I was going for an overall sense of scene, not totally focused on the flyers, but I see your point. Appreciate you taking the time to ponder my photos in-depth! Don't worry, if I'm ever in your area with Discovery, I'll drop on by so we can fill a few CF cards...
