p.1 #1 · Vignette with 24-105mm F4L lens and Lee filter @24mm

I noticed that I had vignette with my 24-105mm @24mm on a full frame body with I mounted the Lee filter holder with the WA Lee 77mm adapter on. This was with the B+W polarizer. Thought that the Polarizer was too thick, so I got the latest B+W XS Pro Polarizer thin version. Still has some vignette at 24mm, even though it is a bit less than with the regular polarizer

The vignette same from the adapter and not the holder because I did some comparison and the holder did not make a difference, only the adapter.

It is not a biggie, just curious why since 24mm is not that wide.

Anyone with this same issue? Thanks.

You really should not put any filter of any type behind the Lee wide angle filter adapter ring, and I am not at all supprised that you got some vignetting. The hole inside the adapter is not large enough to allow it to be mounted that much further out from the front of the lens, and thus you get vignetting showing up at the wide end. In addition to vignetting, it gets very tricky to adjust the polarizer when the filter holder and 100mm graduated neutral density filters are in front of a screw in polarizer, because any polarization adjustment changes the rotation of the grad filters.

Lee makes a specific solution to adding a screw in polarizer. Their solution is to get the 105mm screw in adapter ring from Lee, and mount it in front of the Lee filter holder slots. You then screw a 105mm polarizer in to the ring on the very front, and every thing works reasonably well. You get rid of vignetting problems, plus it is practical to adjust the rotation of both the 100m rectangular filters and the 105mm polarizer. In some cases for very wide lenses, you may need to remove one or two of the three filter slots that normally come with the Lee filter holder in order to avoid vignetting, but I do not think that is necessary with the Canon 24-105. Of course the big catch is you need a $50 adapter ring, the correct length of the special little brass Lee screws, and a very expensive high quality 105mm polarizer to make it all work out. Not to mention that you all ready bought two very nice 77mm polarizers, but at least they are great for when you do not need the Lee holder installed.

A FF body with the 24-105 will optically vignette rather strongly at f4. But you are describing mechanical vignetting where you can see the edge of the adapter.

The Lee 105mm CP is really expensive, there is another solution:
The Lee square CP, which is simply another 4x4" filter in the standard holder.

The thread describes stacking the filters with GND and shows examples.
Are you using the Lee Wide Angle adapter? I places the front of the lens much closer to the first filter slot to reduce the chance of mechanical vignetting.

Part of the referenced link above mentions the Lee tandem adapter, which can allow you to combine two Lee holders in a way that provides independent rotation for each holder. But the tandem adapter plus the second Lee holder adds too much thickness, and will cause vignetting for wide angles even worse than the 77mm screw in polarizer plus a wide angle adapter. So that is not a good solution in this case.

Later in the thread it is suggested to just use a 100mm square circular polarizer in one of the Lee holder slots and to rotate it in 90 degree increments by just removing it and installing it. I do not like the sound of that at all. I find I need to adjust a polarizer to within a few degrees of the needed angle, and so only a very few of my shots would be set right if I only had available the 90 degree increments. If the need is to just use a polarizer, and you have the Lee holder mounted, then a 100mm square polarizer is useful and works fine, but for independent adjustment of both a polarizer and a grad ND on a wide angle, the 105mm threaded adapter and 105mm threaded polarizer is the best way to go. And of course that way is what Lee developed for the wide angle polarizer application.

Yes, I'm using the WA Adapter. I have no issue rotating the pol just by removing the whole Lee setup (just snap the whole kit off and leave the adapter as is), then turn the filter where you want, then snap the whole Lee setup back on. It only takes 5 seconds to do so, so it is not a big deal for me. I've looked at the Lee square Pol, but it is expensive and more trouble than it worth it. The vignette issue is not a big one, since I can always correct that in Lightroom with just some loss around the edge, or if I really want to corrected manually, I can always to that with CS5.

I actually stacked the ND + GND and Polarizer without too much issue, the only issue left is when I use the 24mm end of the lens. Thanks.

and remember I said the adapter causes the vignette not the holder.
