Looking for something to carry with me in my backpack while hiking and biking. It should be able to support a D700 with a 24-70 lens, work with a RRS BH-40 ballhead, and very small when folded up. Also I don't want a center column. I don't really care about height, and it's fine if it's only 10in tall. What sort of options to I have in this small, yet sturdy category?

Ideally, I would get something like this but it is too expensive for me and more tripod than I really need at the moment.

what's cheap? thats relative. you have a excellent body, an excellent lens, an excellent ballhead and you want to support it with what and for what use?

Preferably less than $75. It would be used for when I would like to have a tripod, but it isn't practical to carry my full sized one, like when I am hiking or riding my bike. Most likely I'll be using it for longer exposure landscapes.

My biggest concern is portability and compactness.

tall order for short money. practicality will make some demands in certain areas such as weight, size, stability.

the big question is how much compromise are you willing to make?

You could try a used Leica 14100 tabletop tripod from eBay or similar. Extremely small, but well made.

At that price point, anything you buy will be rather flimsy. If you don't mind getting down low to avoid extending the legs, you can get pretty good rigidity. Extending most any tripod to full height at this price can be done, but it's not very rigid.

Sorry if I didn't make this clear in the first post, but I am not looking for a full height tripod and would prefer something small that I can spread the legs out so I have a little bit more stability. It doesn't matter if it's only eight inches tall.

One sold for 225, and the other had no bids. The 5 others are well above the OP's stated price.

Weird -- the Leica table tripod is $109 new. That's what I use, with a RRS BH-25.

For something cheaper but similar, Manfrotto makes one (as does Kirk, though it's around the price of the Leica, I believe).

For something a little bigger, but with a wider spread, I use a Berlebach wooden table tripod. It's not pocketable, but it's light, and would be a better match to a midsized ballhead.
