p.1 #1 · Problem calibrating NEC PA241W on OSX Lion

Didn't want to hijack Itlouis96's thread "Calibrating NEC PA241W" so I'll start this new one.
I just bought a PA241W with SVII and the i1D2 puck. The numerous calibrations I've made resulted in images with both color and contrast off. The results are not severely off but the images on the monitor are not correct. For example, in an image of a house with warm wood tones and a blue sky, the warm tones go toward the green while the blue of the sky has gone toward magenta. At first I thought this was a problem with the sensor puck but I just had a known good one attached and calibrated with it and getting the same results.
I've made strong editing changes to the calibration target in SV and there is no difference in how an image looks regardless of the changes in the making of the profile. I'm pretty sure the profiles are not being used by the iMac running Lion. I also have a MacBook Pro running SL and was able to get a good calibration profile using it to calibrate the NEC.

Does anyone know if this is a typical problem in using Lion or have any advice on how to work with profiles in Lion.

Thanks, any advice is really appreciated.

Peter

what happens if you do the sRGB emulation mode?

the monitor does everything internally although in wide gamut mode software would still need to know what the gamut was

sRGB mode with sRGB TRC should look perfect in anything, totally unmanaged too though, so how does that look, does that at least look ok with it?

does SV II on the mac let you connect by USB cable to the monitor? i thought someone had been posting here that some macs have grphcs card drivers that don't talk to the nec monitor well if you talk over the monitor cable
from the vid card

That was me... I still have not purchased a monitor, either. Good luck to the OP, and please post a follow-up with this if you don't mind. Thanks!

here is the thread that discusses the Mac/NEC issue but not sure if this is your problem... It seems to be a Spectraview issue more than a monitor issue.

Hmmm, I have the exact same setup (NEC PA241W, SVII software and the NEC Puck) on Lion and I have not problem with calibration and profiling. You haven't install colormunki or other software on yours have you? Did you update the SVII software to the latest version?

I have a similar setup and it's worked well but have just put Lion 10.7.2 on my iMac. My PA241W is connected via DVI, not Displayport. I've had no issues prior to Lion w/ that setup but I dont think I have yet recal'd since the jump to Lion. I seem to recall that there is some issue w/ Displayport which is why I use DVI.

I'll try a new PA241W/SVII cal today if I have time

johnny, are you also using an iMac? I had colormunki installed but deleted the software. I searched for files named colormunki and there were none. Is it possible some unseen files from that program are still present and creating the problem?

Howard, I'm using mini display port to DVI adapter. Please share your outcome when you recalibrate.

I was wrong in my original post where I said "I've made strong editing changes to the calibration target in SV and there is no difference in how an image looks regardless of the changes in the making of the profile." I can see a difference, not sure why I didn't before.

I've put this problem on another forum, LL. The following is the post made there which is a better description of my problem. Thanks for taking the time to read this and please offer any possibilities or ideas as to the cause and/or correction of this problem.

I've been having problems getting good color on my new system comprised of an iMac 2.7GHz i5 running Lion and a NEC PA241W with Spectraview II with the supplied i1D2 puck.

What I'm seeing in my images is overall undersaturation. In addition, colors such as green and blue pick up some red while warmer reddish colors pick up yellow/green. This is not a major change from what I would call correct color but it is not acceptable color. I thought at first that the puck may be the problem but I have tried it out against another known working puck that produced the same results.

I think the problem is with the iMac or Lion. I say this because I've used my MacBook Pro running SL and used it to calibrate the NEC which produced excellent color. The same images I've been testing throughout look great with the profile from the MBP while the NEC is connected to it. I then transferred the profile made on the MBP to the iMac and selected it in system preferences. Now when using the iMac with the good profile from the MBP I'm getting the same poor results. Both computers are using PS cs4 in the Prophoto rgb color space.

I've been struggling with this issue for too long and have no clue at this point how to proceed. Based on what I've said can anyone offer up a suggestion, info or help with this problem? Any advice is appreciated.

Does i1D2 mean the Display2?
If so, have you registered and download the Lion software?

i1D2 is the calibration puck by xrite bundled with the SVII software. Thanks for the suggestion but the download didn't make any difference.
I don't think it's a calibration or monitor hardware problem. The profile that I know to be good when loaded and selected in the iMac doesn't yield a good image.

Problem solved. It turns out that PS was the problem. I had begun to suspect it may be the case so I ordered CS5 upgrading my CS4. That's all it took.
Thanks for the responses and suggestions, I appreciate your making the effort to help.
