p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · I would like to do some smoke photography and have some questions on the lighting setup i need

I'm just an amateur and am looking to play around with some smoke photography... This is the tutorial I plan to follow with a few of my own changes of course:

http://sensitivelight.com/photographingsmoke/

I currently do not have any sort of flash for my 40d. I don't have a lot of money to spend on a setup, especially considering I'm just doing this for fun. Would one of the following kits be everything I need to get going as far as light? Would these kits plug into my camera and work that way or do i need something to master them? I assume that these are cheap, entry level style lights but the reviews seem to suggest they're decent... Any thoughts from you guys?

Thanks in advance.

You're better off with hotshoe-based flashes like YN-560s than those crappy JTL strobes and the like.

Get 2 YN-560s (about $70 each) and a set of Cactus v5 triggers. Then buy a set of colored gels for use on hotshoe flashes. You can make snoots or gobos out of cardboard. Also, buy a couple of manfrotto nano stands or something similar and a couple of flash umbrella brackets. Finish it off with a few sets of eneloop or Duracell pre-charged AA batteries and a good charger. You can find more info on the gear on sites like strobist.

I've done smoke photography with small flashes and with studio strobes (Dyna-lite) and the results are the same. You just have to keep the small flashes closer to the smoke.

Thanks for the suggestions.

So this would be the shopping cart you'd recommend?

(2) Yn-560s

(1) Cactus v5 Trigger set

(1) set of gel for hotshoe flashes

(2) flash umbrella brackets

(2) small and cheap light stand tripods (I dont think i'd buy an expensive name brand for this)

If you like what you see, then these were done with one single flash. Tutorial @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2d281_HoEQ and post processing tutorial @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8_jUAvuilE

If you plan on buying light stands, I would suggest putting a few extra bucks and buy a good quality stand. I highly recommend http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AMOTAY/ref=wms_ohs_product
