Ken,

I'm sure your demands are higher than mine. I'm just an enthusiast but obviously i'd like to have the best results possible at the most reasonable cost. If you're selling your prints (i'm not there yet) of course the ink costs are not a big issue though on the 3880 the carts are pretty small and the larger capacity of the 3p ink carts is attractive.

From my perspective, the ink cost is such a small amount compared to all the other costs in making the print that I don't worry about it and use the manufactures ink if at all possible. If you add up all the costs of your photo gear along with the cost and time of shooting the image...the ink cost is trivial. The only printer I use 3p ink is on my epson 2200 where I use it for dedicated B&W prints and use piezography inks since they produce a better resulting B&W print.

I'd rather support the manufacturer of these great printers so they can continue to generate great products in the future.

No, but others contributing to this thread may be interested in different view points.

Then start a new thread! This is why there are so many flame-wars on this forum. Why go into someone's thread and deliberately derail the topic ? Oy...

I'm not trying to start a flame-war. Most people go to 3rd party inks because they are cheaper. I just want people to realize how much the ink costs contribute to the overall cost of that photo. Maybe once people add up all costs and realize ink is such a small cost, they might just decide it is not worth the "risk" of using 3rd party inks.

Just providing a different viewpoint on the subject, which is always a good thing.

Chez,

The problem with your assumption is that you've never tried 3rd party inks and are providing a viewpoint without even knowing if the other inks might not only be cheaper but better.

Of course one could buy the 220ml carts for the Pro4880 and decant the ink to the smaller R3880 carts...if they can be refilled. If not, there are refillable carts available...although I can't remember where I saw them advertised.

The point is that none of the nay-sayers on this thread have tried the 3rd party inks. They are basing their judgements on the preconceived idea that epson inks are better and that epson price equates to quality. There are enough great reviews of the 3rd party inks and their fade resistance that I'm going to try it. I'd still like to hear from folks who have tried inkrepublic, inkjetmall and inkjetfly but obviously this ain't the forum for that.

Thanks to those with informed replies.

Wrong, I use piezography ink in my epson 2200 for smaller B&W prints. This is because they deliver a better B&W print than what I can get out of the epson inks.

Come on now...we know the majority of people go to 3rd party inks for their cost savings, not their quality.

Nope, had no reason to look at 3rd party colour inks. Here is why.

Just before Christmas I sold 2 of my canvas prints for $1200 ( 60"x40" ). I use a HP Z3100 printer which keeps track of how much ink is used per print. I used a total of 60.55 ml of ink on those two prints. I get my ink for $0.44 / ml so the total cost in ink for the 2 prints was $26.64 which is only 2.2% of the price I got for the prints. If I was really concerned about this cost, I could have raised the price of my prints by another $50 to cover this cost.

Going to a 3rd party ink, even if it saves half the cost, is peanuts in the big scheme of things. I will not experiment with 3rd party inks only to get bitten 5 years down the road when my customers prints start to fade or change colour. Not worth the risk to save a few pennies.

Other people who print should figure out their own costs and see if it is really worth experimenting to save some money. Maybe in some cases it is worth it, but you really need to do some calculations before jumping in.

As a side note, my paper cost was $78, 3 times the cost of the ink.

The issue is You haven't tried them!

How much you sell them for is irrelevant.

The question is whether the quality of the 3p inks is as good or better than epson. Not how much you get for your prints.

I applaud your skill in photography and marketing but as I stated before, I'm an enthusiast not a pro and I want great quality and reasonable prices.

I think I made my point regarding the cost of ink. It might seem expensive at first brush, but once you take everything into account, it really is not that bad. I'll bow out now and let you pursue your quest for 3rd party ink quality.

For interest sakes, take a look at this site which has done an extraordinary amount of work on ink/paper permanence.

What did you prove? That you haven't tried the color inks I was asking about? You've simply repeated the same mantra. Look, I get it. Pros have a calculated workflow and don't have time to experiment and are passing their costs onto the customers. I was not asking about that, nor was I recommending that a pro photographer take a chance on an expensive investment.

I was asking for a recommendation about which 3rd party ink folks have tried. You haven't tried. End of story. Have a nice day.

Rather than replying back with a confrontational post, why not spend a few minutes looking at the website I provided for you. It might contain some of the answers you are looking for. If not, at least it will educate you on print permanance issues.

I already did some research on permanance (SIC) issues. I thought you were done here?

I have only tried to help out with 3rd party inks and offered up a different view than yours. You seem to take this personal. If you are only looking for people who agree with your view, why even ask the question?

It won't help you probably but I used German made OCP pigment ink for my 2200 when I had it and my R1800, with a CIS in both cases. Both these printers were prone to clogging....I don't know if it was the ink or the particular models.

The prints that I got were easily compatible with Epson inks and there has been no fading over several years.

I am still using OCP inks now in a Canon Pro9000.....not a single clog in 11 months of ownership. The cost is about a tenth the price of using Canon carts......the results easily match the Canon inks I started with, on Ilford Pearl.

People sniff at 3rd party inks...but where do Epson and others get their ink from...they have it made for them by specialist manufacturers. I did read that Epson carts are produced both in China and the USA, depending on the model line.

It is worth visiting the website of a company like OCP...it is not some cottage industry somewhere!!
