Wow, this is without a doubt a heated debate. I was completely unaware of the varying feelings relative to filters, though the majority seem to favor AGAINST using one.
It looks like I won't order the more expensive brand. Instead, I'll wait until the Hoya arrives (since I already ordered it prior to this post) and see what I discover. I did order the lens hood though so if the filter goes back, I'm keeping the hood.
If you decide to use a filter, I would just use the one you ordered which should be perfectly fine. I certainly wouldn't spend any more on the other one you listed.
I put a filter on my 70-200 4.0 L IS USM. Because I had one. Got it from a friend for free.
I put it off at least. The only other I used was on the 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM. It saved the frontlens, when I touched a desks corner. Filter was broken, Lens was fine.
All other lenses where protected by the lenshood only and I never touched anything with them. So I did not want to attache a filter - it might have been a sign to universe to try to break it.
Just keep a hood on the 50 1.4. It has a rather delicate constitution, and a good knock to the front can render it a MF lens (known issue with this lens). Mine lives in its hood to prolong the inevitable.
To further protect your images from ghosts and prevent your house from turning upside down sideways, when the Hoyeah arrives, ceremoniously sprinkle it with sand, pour Coca Cola on it and solemnly crush it with a large rock. Pulverize the remains and put them in a jar to carry in your camera bag and sprinkle a pinch at important shoot locations. This will bring you good luck and outstanding images from any whichever gears you use.
I did. Hope all of yours was half as fine like mine. That would mean ... no photographic gear for christmas, just laying infront of the fireplace reading a book, your beloved partner next to you. Your curring cat, too. Never again war ... life is a dream!

Our Christmas was similar, but different. No photo gear. Just us. My dog squaks and grunts. He's a Schnauzer. From Germany.

Ralph, I think you're right. Life is a wonderful dream. There is no place for war.
