Getting the flash is not an issue.... its the FT-1 that is not available.
I rec my FT-1 today from Beach Camera, I had never used them before, Ordered on Sunday and rec. on Thursday. not bad considering Monday was a holiday. They still had them in stock tonight.
I'm going play this weekend.
BIF will take a new learning curve. You really get one shot as the focus locks on. The temp was too cold for a real good try out, later this week I hope to try again on the T. Swans and Eagles with
the 500/4.
#4 was one of the better BIF shots but still slightly out of focus, frozen fingers didn't help.
Really like using the 105/micro w/the FT-1. Focus hunts more than I'd like but I use manual for macro anyway most of the time. A 283/2.8 will be fun.
The subject looks very friendly - My daughter calls her the She Devil, other than my wife and I this charming face will rip your face off if you try to pet her. An abandon kitten my wife brought home that is very loyal to us, even after 6 years just doesn't like other people.

For still photography I don't mind being limited to one focus point... but I could see it being a real PITA for video work. quote<
Indeed, I have been getting better still images with my Pro Glass.
I have gone back to the CX lens for Video.
AutoFocus still works good,
But I cannot do without multiple face recognition and tracking.
I think they crippled the FT-1 just to sell more CX lens.
The good news is that the CX lens are so good, cheap, and there are at least 7 more that may be released this year.

32mm f/1.2 (85mm equivalent)
THIS!
Everyone says that smaller sensors mean it should be easier to design lenses. So why are there so few good fast primes for the m4/3 and now CX line? The one good m4/3 lens that is fast (the Voigtländer 25mm f/0.95) sells for a premium but is always in demand. Enthusiasts want this kind of stuff! The 20mm f/1.7 pancake is another decent example, though it really should have been f/1.4.
Before I'd consider a smaller camera like a V1, I'd want a couple of good fast primes. 10mm and 32mm f/1.2s and I'd be interested.
Seems like quite an interesting camera as an alternative to something like the GRD4. Would probably be very eager to give one a spin if the 10mm were a stop or two faster.

At this time the 10mm f/2.8 is the best CX lens.
It is quite sharp and fast, even wide open at 3200 ISO
I like zooms, and would really like an 8-40 mm f/2.8 CX

does anyone make anything more than a 3x 2.8 zoom never mind a 5x...

Most f.2.8 zooms are very big and expensive.
The CX version will be smaller, but
I would expect to pay a premium for a 8-40 or even a 8-24 f/2.8 zoom.
And this is the reason I did not ask for f/1.4
Just got my FT-1 adapter.... cool stuff. I am extremely dissapointed that my 24mm PC-E will NOT fit on the adapter .. the foot of the adapter interferes with the rotation lever on the lens.... arghhh!
So I see a lot of talk about how wonderful and advanced the AF system (saying it makes the D3 blush), but this is only with the V1 lenses correct? We talking Servo here or just the speed at which it acquires focus (one shot)? If one wants to use an AF-S lens they need an adapter and they are limited to the central focus point and the AF is gimped (is that right). Sorry if I missed this. Thanks for any info!
I'm still playing with the AFS lenses and FT1 adapter but so far here are my thoughts on the focus speed. It's really fast in searching, practically as fast as my D3 trying to search for the focus. Now that's just trying to search for the correct focus - finding it is another story. Out in the daylight I was trying to shoot some birds in flight with my 300mm f/4 afs and it was definitely hit or miss. In dim light, with a number of afs lenses, it would sometimes search through the focal ranges but then give up. I'm talking really dim light and I compared it to the D3 with the same settings and the D3 would sometimes lock on, other times continually search.
The main thing I noticed is that the V1 will search once through the focal lengths and then stop trying if it misses. I definitely think this is just a firmware fix as Nikon could have easily added in all the focus features found in the V1 lenses (ie: multi focus points, full on auto focus, continuously try to find the focus if it misses once); but the fact that they didn't means they don't want to cannibalize sales of their dslrs. Who knows, maybe they will add it in the future. I was really impressed with the V1-lenses ability to lock onto a focus point and it would follow it on screen... something like that would be awesome with birds in flight with the FT1 adapter but alas it's not to be (as of now anyways).
So overall, it's a mixed bag. With good lighting it'll focus on fine. Past a certain focal length it starts searching more and missing, which is more apparent on slower focusing AFS lenses like the 300mm f/4 afs. When the weather improves I'm going to go out again with more lenses as I primarily tried just the 300 f/4 but it could be a lot better with the faster focusing 80-200 afs that I have. Curious to hear what others have experienced.
-- At the end of the day, when dealing with birds in flight you give up focus accuracy to gain a ton more reach. Further tests to come =)

That is a really good point! Thanks for doing the test and giving us your impressions!

I think the FT-1 was purposely limited to single spot without face recognition or tracking for two selfish reasons.
1. They want you to buy the D4
2. They want to sell more CX lens.
What we need is a third party adapter which transfers the full functions of AF-S VR F-mount lens.
And, some "Hack-Ware" to unlock the power of the Expeed 3 Processor.
Then, there will be real pressure on Nikon to either match them and/or come out a V1h or s. ...Show more →
