p.1 #1 · So long PayPal, you're a pain in the.... Alternatives?
Submitted a payment to a reputable store three days ago.
Was told the item would not arrive for Christmas due to an error
Cancelled order and was refunded two days ago, the item had not been shipped.
PayPal is holding funds for up to another week.
The discussion about funds transfer is simply not relevant to me as they received Approval as witnessed by my bank account balance. Clearly the funds have been released and frankly as a long time PayPal user there should be some weighting.
So I guess when I b/s I won't be using PayPal anymore as it certainly is not fast, nor convenient, and questionably secure. Had I used my debit card the amount would never have even been transferred. It's not the end of the world, it's a pain in the ... Back to bank cheques I suppose.
Posting this here as just another story of PayPal pains and an explanation why some simply refuse to use it...of which I am one.
Are there any better alternatives. I understand buyers need some protection too, does google checkout offer anything similar?

I stopped using PP as well. So far, knock wood, I've no problems sending cash, personal checks, etc... and allowing sellers to wait til funds clear to ship. And I do my selling the same way. If the other party prefers not to do it that way, I move on.

Hope it all works out for you!
While I have not totally stopped using PP, I do use it less. I don't mind waiting for a shipment until a personal check clears. Bank fees since the "stimulus" have rose 50-100% for bank drawn certified checks and other transactions so I just send a money order if under $1000 of check.
It is indeed a pain in the tush!!!
Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Photo New Year!

I've been using them for many years and am happy with their service. I know up front what the rules are, fees charged and how the process works. Not always the way I'd like it but they haven't done anything I didn't expect to happen.

I think Paypal is hit and miss and until they put the boots to you everything is hunky dory. As soon as they stick it to you the tune changes. All anyone has to do is a little research and you will come up with enough horror stories to make you very cautious. Their seems to be no rhyme or reason to what they do or how they do it and that is what drives people nuts. The good news is a lot of alternative forms of payment are showing up and a lot of folks are using them with good success. I continue to use them with great caution.

sorry to hear that
bank checks are risky too though
currently, if you see my other post (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1073035), I'm having some severe issues with paypal, i will see what happens in the end, but I may be done with them too
EDIT: it seems it will most likely all be made right, buyer showed up again and is making it right

buying from trusted sellers is one way to increase transaction success even via check/mo. People's definition of trusted seller can vary of course.
I personally look for successful buy/sell feedback, preferably some sales when I am looking to buy. I also look for length member at forum, and forum activity. I also consider their galleries as proof of photography. I require photos of anything I purchase, and try to clarify any unknowns or points of contention up front.
I'm not a paypal fan, but use it to the extent necessary. I rarely use it to pay major companies I buy from like BH, or Adorama. If I am dealing with someone less known, then I might use PP with CC for protection.
We've all had PP lock up funds at one point or another. Have to understand to a point though if you do a direct transfer, then get a refund, it takes a while for the paper trail to catch up.
The new fee free options I am rethinking though. Receiving fee free money as a gift? Leaves the door open for the payment to be classified as a gift for tax purposes. After rethinking this, for 2012, I am not receiving gifted payments. I'll build the fees in, if peopld don't like it, they can buy elsewhere. That's my take. I will only pay that way to a very trusted seller, because there is no recourse paying that way.

I'm not sure about protections but a service called Dwolla.com just came out. They seem to charge 25 cents per transaction instead of a %. Not sure if you can use credit card, think its only wire transfer.
p.1 #13 · So long PayPal, you're a pain in the.... Alternatives?
Yeah Dwolla will work well with trusted vendors for now. If you need protection Credit Card + Insurance is recommended... you may have to wait with PayPal but its better to get your money back late than not at all.
I bought a laptop on eBay a year ago and the seller ended up being a fraud, ran with the money and PayPal refunded all of it... a month later but I got it back at least.

I likewise am not a fan of paypal. They do tend to hold funds a while (so they can invest overnight and earn the interest $$$ like any other big corporation) in my experience also.

I have a paypal debit card, so when I get a payal payment I go straight to an ATM and withdraw it. BTW, paypal debit cards are handled by Chase, so Chase ATM's don't charge a fee. Paypal doesn't advertise this.
